Hello,

The Senn 555s arrived at my doorstep last night; a pleasant surprise after a hard day at school. I gave them a good listen for about an hour and my first impressions were VERY positive (I received the 50ohm model).

Bass was exceptional. These are my first 'real' headphones other than my KSC-75s so maybe my reference point is just a bit lower than others on this site. However, if they bass was any more potent I think my eyes would pop out.

Both mids and highs were very clear. I could pick out nuances in music I never heard before and could almost feel the guitar strings moving on the face of the instrument. LOL, I think it was the first time I ever have actually heard the bass guitar as a seperate instrument.

I will get some more time later this week to audition these cans before I write up a more thorough review. Thanks to those who recommended the 555s to me as a 'bang for your buck' headphone. Tonight I look forward to chillin out with my Senns.

Congratulations! The hd555 is one of the most capable budget phones available-you did choose well. If you think they sound good now, just wait until they've burned in for 200 hours.

What kind of source/amp are you using with them? I do like the bass on the HD555/595, I think it's detailed and tight, but there are certainly much bassier headphones (think DT770s or HD212s). I know what you mean about the bass guitar though, I felt the same way when I first received my HD555s. I've found that the upper bass frequencies are missing on a lot of poor speaker systems, they get lost in the crossover between subwoofer and satellite. This makes you lose a lot of the tone of a bass guitar, and headphones don't usually have this problem. Happy listening!

I just got a pair of these myself after being out of the headphone game for a few years. They've been burned in about 20 hours, and they are definitely nice. I also now understand the Senn sound now vs. Grado. A few years ago I went from Grado 125->325->RS1, then selling them due to finances. Grados are definitely more in your face and to me more detailed. I would still prefer the RS1 to the 555, but for the money you can't go wrong (I got mine for $119 at J&R), and they are much more comfortable than any Grado I had, and they seem to be more practical for things like movies and gaming. I mostly run mine through a D-25S and a Denon receiver, both sound great. I would imagine you get a little improvement with a dedicated amp.

Ah good to hear you like them! I got my pair of 555's a couple weeks ago, but I'm waiting till I get a better source before I write a more detailed review of them here on head-fi. They truly are worth every cent. Happy listening!

Hi and welcome. You made a great choice, I think the 555's could be one of the best bang-for-your-buck 'phone at the moment. I tend to use mine a lot with my Airhead and they REALLY open up with extended bass and even sweeter mids/highs and a wider "soundstage".

Sorry about your wallet
