the HD600 has served me great..but my taste in music has evolved..and i ve gotten more into Trance, Rock (heavy, industrial etc) instead of slower music.

so i was thinking of getting something less warm and with more bass.

the D2000 are great,..but D5000 have a much cleaner bass and better soundstage i heard? (need more opinions)

also..i heard D5000 are easier to drive with similar amps.

what will head-fi recommend...any other full size headphones with punchier/heavier bass & more sparkly highs?

I have HD650 and D5000. Psytrance is simply amazing with D5000, so is dub techno and other electronic music but forget air. I don`t like ambient with D5000 as much as I like it with 650.

The D2000 and D5000 use the same drivers. The differences are the cable and the cups.
If you really want somthing with good, fast and tight bass, great soundstage and excellent mid aned high range you need to go to the D7000. They are better than the D5000. Thier driver, cable and cups are different to the D5000.

I had the D5000 and now have the D7000.

Yes...if soundstage is a concern to you... the D7000 are better. While it may seem that there is less bass in the D7000, it is just because it is better controlled than the D5000.

You want sparkly highs, Denons aren't for you. While their highs are quite clear and good, the headphones are somewhat laid back and certainly aren't "sparkly". Either go for markl mod D5Ks or an altogether different can.

Although the bass and soundstage are superb and they are probably some of the best electronic cans out there, it's just the "sparkly highs" bit that makes me think they aren't for you.

Consider that he'd be coming from an HD600. The Denon highs are going to be sparkly in comparison ::sennheiser_veil::

But yes, my D2000 isn't sparkly or splashy in the highs.

I have a HD580, HD650 and a D2000.

Honestly, I prefer the Senns most of the time, especially with psybient and ambient in general. The D2000s just seem to lose focus with the dominant bass. I'm hoping for the OP's sake that the D5000s don't do this. The D2000 do sound alright with trance but I think I'd still take the HD650.

Whichever Denon you get, I would highly recommend the "Markl mods" to make a huge improvement in bass quality. (Bass quantity is already there in copious amounts.)

I personally find the bass on the Denons to be excellent in stock form, it seems like only at very high volumes does it get overpowering.

Still, you will probably find the bass even better with the Markl mods.

Get a much better rig for your HD-600s. I had both, and after I got a proper mid-range amp for them, the HD-600s were simply the better all-round headphones, even with music where a strong bass is desired for best results. Mind you, what I'm suggesting is probably doubly as expensive as just buying a pair of Denons.

Yeah , giving up hd600 for d5000 may not be a wise choice. Later you may think that hd600 sounds more natural when you get the d5000.

For the above-mentioned musical preferences, the D5000 sounds like a decent bet. But with the markl mod' it should be much safer. Currently listening to my MD5000's now and the bass is forceful but much tighter/refined than the unmodded D2000's (the only other pair of Denons I have heard). Amazing cans made better by this innovative procedure.

I would not part with my HD650, how would I listen to Jazz?

You'd listen to jazz with more bass.

Jaco Pastorius sounds great on the D2000. Better suited than the HD600 for my taste in Jaco jazz. The D2000 does need some EQ in the midrange to make them more suited for jazz and classical. A little bump of 3 to 6 dB in the 1 Khz to 3.5 Khz range depending on personal preference. That fills in the recessed midrange and gets the timbre better for critical jazz and classical instruments.

I personally wouldn't get rid of my HD600 to get a D5000. Get a D2000 instead and keep the Sennheiser.
