Well, looks like I'll be selling my DT770/80's. I just picked up a pair of SR60's, but figured I should look into a good, closed alternative to the DT770/80's, since the Grados may be too open to use in some situations without bothering others.

I'm looking for something that's a good closed "rock and metal" can. I'll have about $100-150 to put towards them. Here's what I've tried so far and didn't work for me once I'd had them for a while:

Sony V6/7506
Senn HD280
Senn HD25-1
AKG K240S
Shure E2's
Ety ER6

I may try the ER6 again, as the detail out of them was pretty good, and they're still about 1/2 the price of the Ety ER4P. The ER4P goes for about $200 brand new, so that's just a hair out of my reach. Ideally, around $100-150 for a pair of closed cans would be better.

thanks in advance,

Apparently you didn't even read my post-- I already had the HD25-1, and they don't sound like a closed Grado, unfortunately...

I wasn't being rude, I just thought it was pretty obvious that I listed that headphone in the list of ones I already tried, and yet he recommended them. It's pretty easy to see that he didn't read the whole post, I was just stating so.

I've heard that the K271S has a weird bass, and a weird, artificial sound overall to them. What sorts of rock have you listened to on them? I know that with some headphones that don't do a particular genre justice, there are some artists that still sound exceptionally good on them.

I've tried the E2's a couple times, and just couldn't get over the lack of treble... not really a muffled, constrained treble sound, but more like an absence of treble. Otherwise, a good fit comfort-wise and block out alot of sound. And the prices have been coming down on them too.. that lack of treble is unfortunately a dealbreaker for me

Hmmm, rule out the Ultrasone 650DVD or 700, as it is basically a smaller, more portable, filmsier, worse sounding version of the DT770-80. I don't think the K271S is really what you're looking for, it has much more of a Sennheiser sound than a Grado sound. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that suits what you're looking for to a T, considering the cans you've already tried. Concerning them though, have you heard all of them with your current source/amp, because if that could seriously change how you view some of them, perhaps.

I did personally love the 271 for guitars. The midrange "coloration" added a sense of realism to their attack and presentation.

The low-low bass is a bit lacking, but it is below most instruments short of an 808, so unless you are a lover of the prominent treble,(they are a bit rolled off) they might be a consideration for good rock cans. Plus, you can get them for about a buck fifty nowadays(with an upgrade cable!!) due to the horrible rap they get here on head-fi.

Hadn't tried the HD25-1's, the E2's or the ER6 with my amp, so I don't know how substantially it would change the sound. I've heard that the ER6's sound pretty nice when amped... The E2's are just way too rolled off in the treble area, and I didn't care much for the supraaural fit of the HD25-1's...

ER6's can be had for around $90-100 new now, and about $75 used.. but for rock and such? I'm trying to imagine "Rust In Peace", "Souls of Black" or "Seventh Son of A Seventh Son" on them....

Raif- would you be talking about new or used for that price? I'll have to keep my eyes peeled on the FS forums...
