The MX550 is better than the MX500, and the MX450 is even better thanks to the absence of that meaningless volume control. For the rest, I comply with all of Headroom's comments on them earbuds.

To me the MX500 had a rather bland and opaque midrange, while the MX450 has a much nicer midrange. Apart for the mild balance difference, that is a factor in preferring the latter for me.

The best earbud for me would be MX450 housing with MX400 bass and MX450 mids/highs. But that's not on the market as of now so poo...

Anyway... When it comes to earbuds, its all about fit for me. The MXx00 series wont stay in my ear whereas the 50's will (smaller).

after having finally heard a set of MX450's, the only comment i can make about them (and the MX500's, for that matter) is "uncomfortable". i though the MX450's pretty much sounded the same as the 500's, but that may simple be because neither set fits in my ears all that well.

just to clarify, the MX500's are uncomfortable for me because they are too big and the MX450's are uncomfortable because of some incompatibility between their shape and my ears.
