Hi, I’m a headphone “newbie” and am setting up a bedroom system. My source is a Sony D-EJ100 portable CD Walkman and my headphones are the Sennheiser HD580’s with the Cardas cable. I purchased a used Emmeline XP-7 headphone amp that will be arriving next week. I need a new or used flexible mini-to-RCA cable (one meter or so) to connect the XP-7 to the Sony and occasionally to a computer soundcard. I’d prefer a 90-degree miniplug if possible but it’s not essential. I’d like to spend $50 or less but would consider spending more if it’s necessary for a meaningful upgrade. The cables I know about (but have never heard) are:

Zu Pivot
Straight Wire (from Headphone.com)
Bolder M-80
Ted’s Earcandy and Panorama
Signal Cable
Kimber Kable

I would greatly appreciate any advice on which of these (or any other) mini-to-RCA cables would work best.

Thanks very much!

go with JMT, who is a moderator here. Jmtaudio.com i believe is the site. He uses some very good homegrown silver wire which sounds great with portable rigs, i think its around your budget as well, cant go wrong with his stuff.

Or you can DIY or have some one DIY for you, and you just pay for whatever materials you want and labor, and presto, high quality cable.

Thanks very much for the JMTaudio suggestion. I went to the web site and the cables look impressive! I will contact JMT re: pricing.

Anyone else have a mini-to-RCA cable to recommend? Thanks.

Noobie to the forums too.

This is one of my worst fears: trying to find this adapter. But now I'm sure I'll try to build my own

I just bought some Zu Oxyfuel RCA's and a Zu Birth power cord from a Zu Cable distributor on Ebay. Do a search for the Pivot, they are always for sale. You can pick one up for a really cheap price.

You could also try Larry at headphile assuming you're not looking for anything too long. I asked him to make me a 6 foot cable once and he said with the methods he uses, it ends up taking a long time. Also the price he quoted me was more than for me to buy an entire new headphone system, so I just skipped it.

nah, next to the mini to mini configuration, a mini to rca cable is probably second most sought after cable. Not really difficult to find one, they are however a pain to build though. Trying to match the lengths of the RCAs, is killer.

A DIY mini would take me 30-45 minutes to assemble, but a Y-splitter takes me a couple of hours

Contact JMT, silver braid is some really nice stuff. Last time I checked he had some very very nice prices for the silver braid stuff. I dont see how he even profits at the prices he charges.
