Hello head-fiers!

Apologies for another ‘please help me make a decision thread’, but I’m a little lost at the moment. I’m seeking some headphones, I will add much more detail below:

Budget £1000 approx

Usage Pleasurable listening at home (maybe some music production too if they work for that)

Music taste Electronic, hip hop, experimental

Audio Experience I have been into audio since I got my first hifi system at 10 years old. After 15 years in hifi as a hobby I discovered active speakers and pro audio, and entirely ditched all the BS of the hifi industry.

I now produce electronic music and am pretty clued up on that front.

Current Listening Equipment My current monitors for music production are a pair of Neumann KH310A. These are ruler flat from 32Hz to 20,000Hz. I also own a pair of AVI ADM9T for general listening. My current headphones are the Sennheiser HD25 II.

Notable headphone history

- My whole life I’ve had a pair of Sennheiser IEMs. I tried the IE8 years ago and was astounded, but couldn’t afford them at the time.

- Grado (mid range model can’t remember model), hated the sound.

- Sennheiser HD600/650 again, just hated them. I don’t think I get along with open backs, I am not a bass fiend but seriously, they massively lack bass and punch.

- Beyerdynamic DT770 at first I was impressed by their bass, but the mids were so recessed, I own them but now never use them

- Beyerdynamic DT 1350 incredible bass extension, everything else, terrible.

- Sennheiser HD25 II these are my go to cans which I use for music production, they are good enough for sound design and composition work, they also translate reasonably well to the outside world. Their tonal balance isn’t bad at all, though they lack a lot of finesse, a little bit of detail, and outright bass extension.

Requirements of new headphones
Well through my research it has become apparent that flat frequency response headphones just do not exist. So instead I’ve decided I just want something lush, sexy, that sounds brilliant, sounds expensive, and balanced. It’s also apparent I don’t get along with an open back design, so I am looking at closed back. I do prefer ON EAR, largely because over ear doesn’t allow me to lay back and rest my head while listening, though I’m not set on either. I would like to drive them from my audio interface, and well as direct from an iPad Pro. I am a bit biased towards brands which have ranges in the pro audio industry, I just think if you can’t make headphones that pros will buy then your cans probably aren’t worth the plastic they’re made of!

Thanks for reading and happy new year! :)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Thinksound On2 are the best sounding closed back on ears I've heard at any price. Lush, sexy, brilliant - yep. They definitely sound much more expensive than they sound. 114.00 on Amazon. Massdrop had them for even less, but I think the drop has closed. Personally, I gave up on on ears for comfort reasons, but the Audeze Sine may be worth looking into. I think Audeze has some for 150 bucks atm. Retailed for 400 I believe.

I know you specified no open backs, but I think you should at least consider the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro. I think these might check a lot of your boxes.
Bigger, punchier, better extended bass than HD 650; mmmaaayyybbbeee you could call the mids slightly recessed, but really I only hear it in comparison to the HD 650; Beyer treble, love it or hate it, though I find it to be fun and sibilance free. Soundstage is cozy, though imaging is outstanding. Detail is amazing. Personally, I think if these don't give you enough bass, either you're under-driving them or you're a closet basshead. Build quality is also outstanding.
Currently £399 on Amazon UK, which leaves plenty of money for amp and DAC.
