So I've owned my SE530s for a couple of days and I can no longer wear them anymore. Whenever, I put them in my ears, I get pretty bad temporomandibular joint pain (jaw pain).

I get really nauseous as well. I can't return these to the store I bought them from but I'm thinking of contacting Shure. Shouldn't I get a refund from them if their product is causing harm to me?

Does anyone think I have a case and that I should contact Shure? Those phones were tres expensive. Your input is much appreciated.

Don't know what Shure will do for this, but you should try contacting them. Have you used other IEMs before? If so, did they also cause you these issues? What tips did you use with the SE530s?

some r more sensitive than others.
i've got some pain on mine too.

try this

sounds like u've got some serious pain.
make sure u squeeze tips b4 insertion.
moisten ear tips with wet fingertips (just a little) so it doesn't rub dry on ur inner ear (ouch)
try smaller tips

ur not alone

just like my sennheiser pc-150 (over ear)
everyone had complaints about how much pressure it puts on the ear.
but most of us get used to it. (ur ears r very sensitive)

understand ur body

btw...with IEM pushin on ur ears we have a physiological tendency to tense up all the way to ur head.
drop ur jaw and relax ur head from neck up....u don't have to drop ur jaw and drool lol

nausea can be can usually be alleviated by breathing very slow and deep.
caution: if u breathe too fast u'll puke.

last resort

a customer representative from shure told me on the phone that
99.9% of the time they'll honor warranty even if its bought from unauthorized dealers.
he said that shure doesn't want to punish their customers.
usually if u send it in they'll check if its genuine.
if they confirm it is genuine, it usually means they've made money from u.
how? authorized dealers, usually deal to unauthorized dealers, who in turn sold u the product.

who to call
but if u bought from an authorized dealer, there shouldn't be a problem returning if u just had it for a few days.
call them to find out

email takes 24 hours...too long for me

I would try a variation of Shure olive and Comply foam tips. If it still causes you any pain then IEMs are not for you.

Ditto. Try some techniques listed above first though.

It seems that you got one of those very sensitive inner ears. There are some people who naturally have low tolerance to inner ear balance distortion (like some who get carsick easily, etc), and when you insert the IEMs in deep you are causing minor imbalance to your inner ear. Now, this is something that to some degree happens to everyone at first, and one can get used to (I remember it took me about a month or so to get used to it at first too with my first IEM's, SE210s) so give it a bit of time and if you still find it uncomfortable after long term, you'll either have to give up IEM's or try custom sleeves.

And also try all the tips given above. Try moistening the tips, trying different tips, and experiment with different depth of insertion (deeper in, shallower).

Thanks for all your feedback. Thanks everyone. The smaller olive tips are a bit better but it still causes discomfort and makes me a bit nauseous.

I've tried looking everywhere for this problem and haven't found it. I'm feeling pretty sick now but I'm so busy at work I can't really stop working.

I stopped using my IEMs for a day now. Still, my jaws feel like I've been chewing on bubble gum for hours. The muscles are in pain and feel exhausted. Can't take any anti-nauseants because they have drowsiness as an SE, which is not an option.

Maybe I should see an ENT...

What really sucks is that I love the sound I get from those SE530s but I'm feeling pretty crappy now.

Damn dude sorry to hear, hope you feel better...The yellow foamies actually mold to your ear canal shape and don't really push any further onto the ear canal walls to re-expand to it's shape. The shure olives re-expand to the exact shape it was so it will push on your ear canal walls to do so most likely causing your nausea. Give the yellow foams a try because their expanding ability is not so forceful as the shure olives and the yellow foamies sound alot better than the shure olives.

I tried on my SE530s yesterday and my q-Jays. Couldn't stay away. Still get that jaw pain but it wasn't as intense. The nausea isn't as bad either. I know its effed that I'm going back to these after they've caused me so much discomfort.

I think this is an issue with something foreign being in my ears. I think I've very sensitive to that. I wore earplugs before but just once and not for a very prolonged period. I don't this is an IEM issue, it's more of a there's something in my ear issue.

I've also noticed a very mild tinnitus. FYI, I don't listen to the phones very loud. They're actually turned down a lot. I hope the tinnitus isn't a portent for some major hearing loss problems to come.
