Pretty much all the issues I have with iTunes relate to the metadata. Some people who create the original data have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. Albums where all tracks are by the same artist are listed as compilations (typically greatest hits albums) as are albums which have tracks featuring other artists. Which invariably is not how the CD cover describes things.

Also, if iTunes treats an album as a compilation then it because that‘s what the metadata database they use says it is. All you have to do is change the metadata and iTunes will put the album in the correct place.

ITunes uses the Gracenote database, which is crowd-sourced. I have a lot of obscure indie CDS from the 80s, and I have submitted their metadata to gracenote. Usually I don't like doing work for free, because of course they turn around and sell what I've done for them, but in this case I have had a couple of occasions when my itune back up failed and I needed to re rip CDS. I was glad to have my work preserved somewhere out there with the correct data for my stuff.

But the quality is exactly what you would expect from randos on the web. Not Apple's fault (in this case).

I spent a bunch of time recently reripping my CDs to ALAC, since they were previously done for the most part as 160 kbps (back in 2001, when I had more limited drive space). I decided to try dbpoweramp, and found the metadata on there was solid, for a wide range of stuff. They connect to 5 different providers and if something looks fishy, you can look through and pick the one that looks correct. It's $39, but also has a good (and fast) format converter, which I use to convert the whole library to various other formats with more limited storage (my truck prefers MP3, ipod AAC, etc), and some tools for (semi)automatically fixing messed up metadata on existing tracks
