I also have a Macbook Pro as music server, running JRiver. There's a digital preamp in JR and mine is set to -9dB ... gives the amp more room to breathe. And, the sound is less fatiguing.

I have the opposite problem—I run my amp in high gain and sound pressure is never enough!

j/k but with highly dynamic records I do turn the knob up beyond 12 o’clock even on high gain. Granted, I’m using an EQ plugin to match the Harman Target with my cans and that commands a -7.3db preamp setting; then again my cans are low impedance (35 ohm) and high sensitivity (105db) One day I’ll probably wake up deaf XD

Not a JRiver user; is the pre amp always on, can it be defeated, why is it there? I do not understand this.
It can be set to 0dB so defeating it. But, I realized better SQ when I put it to -9dB. Prior to that, at 0dB, my rig was a bit hot. Hope this helps.

At Schiit-Europe in the Netherlands the Freya S is out of stock. Will supply go to Holland? Or is it advisable to order from Schiit Audio directly?
@Jason Stoddard, stock is getting tight? no more 230v shipments to NL?

Anyone know if it's possible to have Amazon music HD send a bit-perfect signal to an outboard DAC without getting molested by the Windows operating system?

Not at this time since Amazon Music HD uses shared mode only. Wasapi exclusive mode is built into Windows, all Amazon would have to do is some work on the Windows app to enable exclusive mode. But they don't seem interested.

I finally bit the bullet on Qobuz when they did their recent price drop.

why is this happening ? are you using 10ohm cans in a very power headphone amp with no gain control? Lower gain in your software ? When I listen to compressed clipped recordings (not by choice lol) I lower gain in jriver. I'm using 70 ohm LCD2F either out of liquid platinum or Asgard 3 and I have no issue with things being too "loud" I don't like to put anything between my DAC and headphone amp either.

Using HD600s. Amps are Liquid Spark (on low gain) and Crack. I can lower the signal on Audirvana but everyone's saying "don't do volume control before the DAC". And yes compressed recordings are worse but it's not limited to that. It's a general problem.

I'd mail Schiit directly to confirm/deny. Probably get a quick(er) answer that way.

Yeah, ever since their overhaul of their support system they answer within minutes, even at 0200 on a Sunday! (Most likely the exception not the norm, but DAMN!) Now that's customer service!!!
