Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Oh that's not my stack. My tabby cat is too lazy (or well trained) to get on my electronics. She prefers cushy sleeping objects.

I wonder what the chances are of Schiit making a gel-foam topped dedicated class-A (SS or tube) cat warmer? I imagine that cats would be drawn to class A Tube cat warmers since they are so discriminating.

You have a get together coming up featuring some Schiit gear as I recall? This coming Sunday I believe. Hopefully you have a great turnout, keep an eye out for this guy if you want to learn about tube amps and transformers.

To the best of my knowledge LTA is still using some of his designs but it has been a while since I spoke to them.

10. What is the typical distortion level of a good loudspeaker transducer?
13. What is the typical distortion level of a good recording microphone?

The best measuring woofer I know is the 16" Fostex FW405N. At 90 dB, THD is under 0,1% from 30 to 450 Hz.

Neumann has some interesting stuff in their download section https://en-de.neumann.com/file-finder .
Their Omni mic KM 130 breaks the -80dB barrier at 107 dB SPL, but only in the high mids.

I'm helping with a Head-Fi meet on 15 Dec in the Washington D.C. Area. It will be at the Metro Park Complex near the Springfield Metro. 6363 Walker Lane STE 300Alexandria, VA. It will be from 9:30AM until 6:30PM

Some of us will probably grab some food after if that is of interest and as always, feel free to show up when able!

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/dc-area-meet-december-15th-2019.919067/

Schiit has sent us some gear to demo. I'm tracking that Schiit sent us Bifrost 2, Ragnarok 2, Lyr 3, Modi 3, Magni 3, 3+, and 3 Heresy, Loki

@Paladin79 has sent me the tubes from the tube shootout for us to compare in a Lyr 3.

Right now I'm thinking I'll bring my Jotenheim, Loki, Mimby (edit: Sorry, Modi Multibit), and Asgard 2. Along with a selection of my phones: M50X, EL-8, HD6XX, Grado 225, and ER-4XR.

Hope to see some of you there!

@Jason Stoddard gain specs (presumably Av) for Magni 3+ and Magni Heresy under the specs tab look strange to me. is it gain = 1 (0dB) or gain = 1.41(3dB), or something else?

Low gain is 1x, high gain is 5.5x.

Amazing internet radio station I listen to is Radio Paradise. https://radioparadise.com/player. You can play different stream qualities all the way up to Flac.
You can choose four different Channels ( Main, Mellow, Rock, and Electic.). Its is funded by donations. They were out of Paradise Calif. until the fires. Fantastic playlist imho.

Yep, nice. Thanks!

My questions with these numbers:
What is the measurement distance?
Are the codes D2 the 2nd harmonic and D3 the 3rd + 5th harmonic in the graph?
Above the graph K2 and K3 are mentioned, next to the graph D2 and D3. (Klirrfaktor = harmonic I think)
Was the woofer mounted in a baffle, in a box, or measured in free air?

Without that information the numbers mean very little because you don't know what is measured.
IMHO Typical way of giving misleading or at least incomplete information and hope people don't look for the context to make it relevant.

https://www.cnet.com/news/dolby-atmos-music-comes-to-jay-zs-tidal-service/

So surround sound music streaming is a thing (who knew). Disclaimer: I own about 5 DVD-A Discs and a player.

Tidal is now streaming select tracks in Dolby Atmos.

Amazon music HD is streaming select tracks in Sony's 360 Reality Audio. I see conflicting information on which devices Sony supports.

https://www.cnet.com/news/sony-360-...o-mobile-phones-amazon-echo-studio-this-fall/

https://www.sony.com/electronics/360-reality-audio

Odds are these will go the way of DVD-A and other defunct formats. At least for now the Dolby Atmos looks to be the worse of the two since it only works on select Android devices (barf). At least the Sony is made to work inside the software app on your preferred smart device (including idevices :) ).... it says it works with any headphone, does this mean you can still use a Schiit Dac or a Dragonfly (I say this cause most smart devices don't have headphone jacks these days implying you will need a dac (at least a headphone dongle dac to listen or BT))?

If anyone has experience with the Sony I'm at least curious to hear.

And yes I know Schiit won't be decoding these formats unless they truly go mainstream and if there isn't a bunch of licensing and proprietary BS (looking at you Dolby).

Yeah, like the market needs something like that... It would be OK if we could trust manufacturers to just stick with Class A cat warmers. But I'll bet Jason & Co. at Schiit would be the first to market with Class A/B cat warmers, or even worse, Class D multi-bit cat warmers. Holy cow! They'd have to do a full weekend-long, pet-friendly meet just so we could get some reviews in regarding the benefits of the different topologies.

What about those of us who travel with our cats? Would 12VDC, RV-friendly versions of these products be made available?

The measurement is taken from the renowned Hobby Hifi magazine, which has been around for over 20 years. It is one of the three DIY loudspeaker magazines (next to Klang+Ton and hifi-selbstbau.de)

The distortion measurement shows d2 in blue and d3 in red. d5 is absent in this graph.

They measure in 1 meter distance in a 6x6x6m³ room. The woofers are mounted in the floor, which acts like the baffle, and under that is a giant 1000l, heavily damped cavity.

Thinking it and saying it are not the same thing. :smile_phones:

I do need to get Bill involved in checking out some 6080 tubes so he will buy every type known to man and save me a lot of work. I need to find four that are very well matched yet are closer to $10 each as opposed to those going for $100 or more.

But I have nothing to listen to them with. Better send me an amp. :relaxed:
