Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I've been listening to my Rag non-stop since my Yggy B unit arrived a month ago. The more I listen the more I like it and respect what this SS design accomplishes. The key for me is it's got to be fully heated up to sound it's best. I don't leave it on 24 / 7 /365 but on days I know or suspect I'll be listening, I turn it on while sipping my first cup-a Joe in the early morning. It just sounds better as the day wears on. I shut it down at the end of my listening day.

The only thing I would ask for is more steps to fine tune the volume better. Even the type of volume control used in my other Schiit would be okay with me if it sounded at least the same.

@Jason Stoddard reading the modi webpage, looks like you missed a modi 2 in the FAQ section

  • Analog Section: Modi 2 uses the OPA1662 op-amp and is DC-coupled, Modi Multibit uses the AD8512 and discrete JFET buffers and is DC-coupled with a DC servo.

Fixing that now.

I just placed my order for a Modi 3 (along with a Tong-Sol tube for my Saga)!

I'm reorganizing my system, and there is a place in it reserved for a Bifrost Multibit, but I'm waiting on that to be updated. Since the Modi 3 has all of the same functionality, including 2.0V RMS output (holy Schiit!), it will be a perfect placeholder and allow me to move forward with my plans. When the Bifrost comes in, I'll move the Modi to my headphone rig, or maybe my car :thinking:

Seriously though, part of the motivation for this purchase is out of appreciation for what a great device this is. The fact that it retains all the functionality of the Modi Uber for 2/3 of the price is crazy. And the "cost cutting" measures have all been used to make improvements. The toggle, for instance, looks great in my opinion, and I personally love the feel of it on the Jot, so I'm looking forward to having it here (not to mention there are 2 less LED's to put light-dims on :wink:. Another example is taking advantage of the switching psu to offer the zero-power-draw USB input, which is huge for me, since my primary source for music is my phone. Another example is the 2.0V RMS output, which apparently wasn't feasible using a linear power supply at this price.

All in all, this is amazing work, and I can't wait to get mine and start playing with it! I'm sure this is going to be a hit.

A couple years ago I spent a couple days with 7 different pairs of headphones under $300 for a work setup and I ended up going with Audio Technica ATH-M50x which were only $99 at the time. These coupled with a Modi 2 Uber and a Vali 2 has been an amazing combination for me and was under $400 although I wish I had gone with Mimby instead of the uber now, however when I purchased the uber I had no clue what a multibit was and definitely didn't think it was worth the extra $150...

I actually prefer the sound of the Modi 2 Uber to the Mimby, Mimby seems like it ruins the energy of female vocals to me. Audio is very subjective, always keep that in mind.

That being said, I just ordered me a Modi 3, since the only DAC I have currently is the Dragonfly V1.2 lol

When Dave delivered the second PCB (this one with parts on one side, but, like most of our boards these days, 4 layers in design), I thought we were done. It sounded good, measured good, and worked in all of its permutations, thanks to some custom firmware for both the USB input and the on-board microprocessor.

Any chance you will post a picture of the PCB?

@Jason Stoddard
Jason, can you please clarify something. So if I want to run optical to my PC, I need to have the wall wart plugged in for optical to work - plugged in to the dedicated micro usb power one not the data one? and no USB to PC. or can I do USB to PC for the power, and run Optical to PC as well, and just select optical from sound settings?

The manual covers this, but yep, you have to have a 5V source from somewhere. Power USB to USB wall wart, data USB to computer...it doesn't care. But it needs to have power.

Thanks Jason, this is probably the best combo of the decade for the price point, especially being made in USA with people who love what they do for a living. My modi 3 and magni 3 were ordered a bit ago, cheers and have a good one.

OK now. 1st it was Magni and now it's Modi. I'm thinking you guys still need to further consolidate your MB DAC line-up. I think a $249 Yggy, Jr. is just the ticket!! Think of how many fewer SKUs you'd have and no more "which MB DAC should I buy" questions! Too aggressive? OK -- I guess I could settle for a $599 Gumby, Jr. in lieu of the Bifrost. :wink:
