Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Nice chapter. A few questions.

You mentioned if Freya is SE then the output is SE in passive and and JFET. What is the XLR output like? Is it similar to using an RCA to XLR adapter?

The remote function seems simple. Can a universal remote work?

As already mentioned, are there 12V triggers?

Doesn't 300 volts on the plates mean Freya can only work with 6SN7GTB tubes?  The original 6SN7GT from from the 40's and 50's are primarily 250V tubes if I'm remembering correctly.  Would be a shame to see somebody put their rare black glass round plate Tung Sol 6SN7GTs in and have them die 6 months down the road.

Early 6SN7s were 300V. Later were 450V.

However, all 6SN7s will take insane, insane overvoltage. Mike used them in a stat amp way back when with something like 500V across them.

Also, 300V rail does not mean 300V on the plate.

A couple more answers:

1. No 12V triggers.
2. No standby mode.
3. No power switch on remote.
4. No home theater bypass.
5. They don't run all that hot, chassis-wise, you don't need a ton of ventilation--but the Freya tubes should have a few inches above them on a rack at least. When LISST is available, you can always go that way to make it run cooler, or leave the tubes out entirely.
6. You get XLR and RCA output on Freya from all inputs and in all output modes, but SE input in passive mode and in buffer mode will result in SE output on the XLRs.

Hope that clears a few things up.

Jason I hate you (not really), yes I really hate you (no, not at all).

I was totally set with my system and starting to save up for a pair of Song3 speakers when you dropped this on me. Now I want a Freya to go with my Gumby. Want isn't the right word , I need a Freya to go with my Gumby.

Damn (Thank) You.

One of the "use cases" (to use corp-speak) is to address the desire to have a DAC with volume control. Here are two volume controls--both of which can be used purely passive--and don't use digital-domain volume control, pots, or volume-control ICs.

I was pretty happy with the thought of getting a Jotunheim to complement my Mimby into powered monitors.  But the case is very strong for the Freya instead.  Oh and while I'm at it I could update to a Gumby...you know, to match aesthetically.

Enablers.  That's what you Schiit-heads are.  Enablers.

Thanks for that!

  Jason,

Is it possible to use 6922 tubes with adaptors?

Finally a proper V-8 engine for Schiit and you want a 4 cylinder??  There is no replacement for displacement.

This is not to say that 6922 family is bad for all applications.  They justify their existence by their lack of noise, making them suitable for phono stages and applications such as amps that may drive IEMs which expose itty bitty levels of noise.

Aside from that, 6SN7s RULE.

Yes that Does Thanks Jason. I am still trying to wrap my head around the flexibility and capability that is offered at this price point. As I said in a Previous Post, a Ninja Like Assault on the High dollar 2 Channel world. I'm In

Does the cooling system have Tubular Stainless Steel Exhaust Headers?

Ouch! Maybe that was a stupid question. But I'm happy to see the new products and hope someday to able to build a system with them.

Thanks

There is no such thing as a stoopid question - only strongly opinionated answers by those who occasionally lack filters..

No, but there is a cigarette lighter socket, convenient connectivity for the ever popular auto suck accessory.

My company can make you a highly reliable resistance wire element to place across your 300V rails if you need a sub-tier supplier.

Thanks for the numbers.  Not sure why I was remembering wrong, aside from 250V probably being a very typical application voltage for the tube since all the tube manuals usually have full operating point data for it.

Bummer about the 12V trigger.  I've been reading the Schiit Story since the beginning so I understand the methods by which you make your decisions, but I do honestly believe a lot of pre-amp users will mourn something like this being missing.

In the context of the other design decisions, it seems sensible. If you have to walk over to your equipment rack and reach behind the preamp to turn it on when you start listening, it's not that hard to reach down a bit more and flip on the amp, too.

Between that and the lack of HT bypass, it's clear that this is something designed for the kind of old-school traditional two-channel rigs sitting on a shelf, and not something you would plug into your home theater setup to improve the sound when you want to listen to music. (Which is a pity for me personally, since I've got a mediocre HT receiver driving much higher quality power amp and speakers, and the idea of plugging a sweet inexpensive preamp like the Saga in between the receiver and amp for music purposes would be very cool; but oh well, I use headphones most of the time for music listening anyway.)

They May miss them, Using Cars for example. The creature comforts for the masses are the first things that go when you start getting into the ones designed for performance and racing. Power windows nope. Weigh to much. A/C nope adds engine load. Power steering Better get that can of spinach out, another engine load. Power Seats. Nope That crap is unsafe and weighs to much. No Sound deadening and usually a Lack of  or minimal Mufflers. The result is a kick ass machine that's a little uncomfortable, slightly unruly but it will Go fast and turn fast.

I read something about Etorre Bugatti Years Ago, When cars were starting to offer hydraulic brakes instead of mechanical brakes. Bugatti was asked Why don't we use Hydraulic brakes instead of mechanical brakes. His response was something to effect of I build cars to go not to stop.

Another supposed quote is "I build the cars I like. If people wished to buy them, well, that could possibly be arranged."
