I have been a fan since his debut album. Some became aware of his work when Werewolves of London appeared in the movie The Color of Money. I liked his wit and humor as well as song composition. I have no problem spending hours on projects like this as I listen. Just a knife handle.
Excitable Boy is my favorite Zevon album, and I often use Nighttime at the Switching Yard for test listens.
I like the UKs as well, but (like a woodworking cable builder here), I REALLY like the CV181T - II. And they also make the 6SN7SE (tennis ball) and the 6SN7 HIFI versions too. Nothing wrong with any of them, frankly.
Edit: aaaaaaannddd there’s another. Amplified parts has a PSvane 6SN7GT “classic line” tube for $25 and change. Who knew?
I actually stumbled upon a really cool application for the Philips. l hadn't ever paid attention to it before, but my tube tester has filament (heater) voltage settings all the way up to 117v. Hitting the 12.6v filaments of the Philips with 117v is seriously cool to watch. Happens fast, so you can't blink.
I consider this a mercy killing for the tube, and also a way of contributing to the audio world by saving someone, somewhere the horror of having to listen to one of these things for years.
That reminds me of some playing around I did quite a few years ago. The company I worked for at the time made current sources for laser diodes among other things. I hooked a green LED up to the source I was playing with and increased the amount of current driving the LED to 3 or 4 times its max rated value to see what would happen. At first nothing. Then the wavelength started shifting first to yellow and then ultimately to red just before it died. An interesting couple minute test of semiconductor physics.
