Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I'm
Totem Acoustics makes some fantastic gear that should be in your range used. Clean clear sound.
Maybe GoldenEar? They sounded harsh to me when I heard them.

Do you want big floorstanders or monitors to pair with the sub? (The latter is probably more economical)
Also, don't forget about https://www.head-fi.org/threads/schiit-two-channel-clubhouse.843459/

Can you do a kit?

Yes, I could build a kit. That would be fun. I don't have a ton of wood working tools, so a knockdown cabinet would be best. As far as electronics, schematics are no problem, and I'm certified in soldering. What do you have in mind??? :smile_phones:

I need some help from some IT-savvy folks. I don't want to hijack the thread with something not on the sine-wave, so I'd appreciate a PM. I need to expand my storage and need some advice about external hard drives (SAS? SATA? 2.5"? 3.5"?) and racks/ back planes.
I don't think that it is possible to hijack this thread.

I would answer your question with Drobo 5N2 for network storage. The 5D is direct attached storage

Good to hear about the work on new analog boards for Yggy, that's when I'll upgrade both of mine to Unison to match up with the CD spinner, which will most likely come out first and I can live with SPDIF / AES out on URD until then.

Still no mention of the feature set on URD.

WOW!
Some thoughts:

After the last update to Roon, I was initially pleased with a subtle difference in playback (note: i'm using NO DSP in Roon, in other words my playback quality shows purple). There was a perceived difference in clarity - at first. Extended listening since, especially during long sessions, I found to be fatiguing, something changed. As an experiment today, I decided to listen ONLY to locally stored content (ripped to .WAV using dbPoweramp), and found no issues with fatigue at all.

I decided to setup a quick test: Steely Dan's "Everything Must Go" - Green Book. I have this on CD and via Tidal. Note that this is ONLY available on Tidal as MQA.

The difference was noticeable.

Tidal Subscription cancelled
I had TIDAL on a free trial and never got beyond that.
Didn't like the sound, their lies about 'lossless' MQA or the owner (both past and present).
I won't be giving them a penny!

I’ve been using Tidal for a while and found their sound quality hit and miss. Some tracks sounded fantastic and others sounded worse than my purchased AAC files played through jRiver. I did not understand why that was the case until now. I’ve cancelled my subscription until and if they address this MQA posing as lossless FLAC fiasco.

Hey,

I hate to do it, but I have an audio related question. (Sorry). :nerd:

I know Schiit-Heads tend to focus on headphones. But, I'm curious as to how many speaker users are here? Also, what type/brand?

The reason I ask, is I'm getting the urge to upgrade. While my AR's are great, I want something different. Something phase coherent. KEF or Elac, Magnepan, Martin Logan, even vintage, like Acoustat or Apogee. Looking for feelings on panel speakers. More curious, mainly. I've heard Acoustat and Magnepan, but it's been years. Do the Uni-Q type coaxial speakers compete with those? If I could afford an Alsyvox, I'd do it. Most likely, I'll look for used, since I'm cheap.

Ideas?
I would guess that speaker preferences are an even more personal and subjective topic than favourite DAC/amps/sources... and maybe even more so than the 'best' BBQs....
In my first 'Hi Fi' system, I had Celestion speakers which cost about £65 in 1973, I loved them and still have them in a box somewhere.
I used them for almost 35 years and they survived many upgrades of turntables, amps and then finally a CD player in 1995.

We are very lucky in the UK that we have a long-established, and very knowledgeable loudspeaker specialist, who offers kits and drive units.
They are called Wilmslow Audio; I appreciate that is not very helpful for forum members outside the UK...

Many years ago I had planned to build some large floor standing speakers using a Wilmslow Audio kit based on ATC drivers.
I had heard some ATC speakers and thought they were the best I had ever heard.

In the end I bought some very old used 'active' ATC speakers ( SCM 100 ASLs) about 13 years ago. They were old but the cabinets still looked like new.
Five years ago I had them completely rebuilt at the ATC factory- with new LF and HF drivers and new, upgraded, amp packs comprising 200W,100W and 50W power amps.

The Mid range drivers still measured as new, so these were retained. That was good news as these 'soft dome' units are possibly the most important drivers and not cheap!
The total cost of used speakers and rebuild was more than a kit, but a lot less than a new pair of SCM 100 ASLs, which now retail at around £16k in the UK!
They also look a lot better than any cabinet I could have made!
They still look like new and even more importantly, they sound exactly the same as a brand new pair.
All audio is very personal and subjective, but to my ears, the ATCs are the best speakers I have ever heard and with an Yggy A2 driving them, they sound fantastic:beyersmile:

Those Wilmslow Audio transmission line kits are fantastic! Very much in line with something from ATC. A shame they aren't available here. Those would be epic.

Thanks...! :beerchug:

I don't know about "very." The audiophool segment who prefer MQA is likely pretty small in size and spending power compared with 1) the great majority who doesn't give a rat's behind for anything beyond MP3, and 2) those who buy the highest-priced gear. Sure, they'll make some $$$ off the marks phools, but that's in the same ballpark as fancy cable vendors.
The problem is, every person who subscribes to Tidal subsidizes it, and people who buy DACs with MQA who never use MQA subsidize it. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for MQA, but it seems to be showing up in more and more places.

Edit: also as shown in that video, even if you subscribe to Tidal and explicitly choose the Hi-Fi lossless option to avoid MQA, on titles that have both MQA and "Lossless", both are MQA.

I can see for gaming wanting the updated USB compatibility and also the optical, but for me, my Hel 1 is the perfect work desktop one box solution.
The USB for computer audio and conferencing, the 3.5 mm for my phone dock. Optical and USB would make this setup more difficult without adding more adapters, etc.

Now I'm gonna have to listen to that album again. Wow that brings me back

I did hear a much earlier version of those Wilmslow Audio transmission line kits, based on similar drivers ( Volt and Scanspeak) when I last visited Wilmslow Audio.

That was many years ago, but they sounded fantastic!

Wilmslow no longer offer ATC kits, but those transmission line kits are a similar design.

They also used to offer an 'active' ATC kit, using ATC's Mk 1 amp pack, but the latest ATC amp packs are much better.

I'm currently on a free 6 month trial for Tidal so I'm just going to let that run its course. However I just signed up for 3 month free trial of Amazon Music HD. For my musical interests, it seems that Amazon has better selection. Don't need MQA.
