That would actually make a great blog post, “How to resolder vintage tubes” (or something like that). With all the pictures, instructions, explanations, story, anecdotes, etc, etc :stuck_out_tongue:

Do you have any thoughts on just who might do such a thing?

I'd be happy to contribute some photos on how NOT to resolder vintage tubes. :) :)

Trust me, I have seen some of his work and he can live up to that boast, but Bill is improving. Give him another decade or so and his work could be passable.

Passable is relatively subjective. I can live with that. :)

If this Schiit transport allows the owner to use it as a ripper (via USB), well... IMO, that would drive the sales cause a lot of guys that went to digital land (like myself) still are buying CDs (that aren't available as digital downloads) in order to rip them to flac. Having a transport/ripper with the usually great Schiit quality would be without a single doubt, very tempting to me :D

I'm not expecting it to have ripping features, but if it does, I'd buy one just to get rid of the POS Asus I'm using at the moment. Every time I hook it up to my PC it doesn't recognize it, and I need to delete and re-install it's drivers...

I can add “How to solder vintage tubes to J-STD Space quality.”
I should be replacing the solder in some Foton tubes for a friend pretty soon, I will take some appropriate photos and add narrative when time allows. Some folks re-flow the old solder inside the pins but personally I replace a high percentage of it to avoid future problems. Most problems seem to be in Russian tubes from the 50's to the 80's, Foton and Melz. This tube in particular is one that several folks love in the Freya, a Melz that some folks call the 1578, this is one from 1963. thumbnail_IMG_1754 (1).jpg

Interesting. The Sol page no longer has the Grado cartridge as an option but lists the Audio Technica AT-VM95EN instead. Makes me wonder what came out of the recent "blind" listening session at the Schiitr?

Note that all Sols will be shipping with the A-T cartridge, since it has given the best overall performance. The option to purchase Sol without a cartridge is gone. There was simply too much setup and confusion with no standard cartridge, so now every Sol will come pre-set-up with a standard cartridge. We should be launching again as soon as the new mats come in, probably around the end of the month.

Thanks for the update, Jason. I'll be ordering one as soon as they're back up for sale.

That's a great choice for a cartridge. When it's time to replace the stylus, buyers will have the option to try the AT Microline or Shibata styli for a modest price.
