Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Oh you silly goose, that is a psychic.
An amateur futurist reads science fiction and other sources for clues of planned futures.
This isn't that complicated.
If I were psychic, I would bet heavy, on the stock market plunge and would be re-buying stocks at the depressed price.
So, because you saw plans for a wireless tablet back in 1980s-90s, you find it necessary to continue this exchange.
Are you bored, just curious about your own future?

I know what a Futurist is.....and I suspect you are as bad at that as your are with the people here. How did someone put it? Passive aggressive? You are certainly that along with being pretentious and sometimes condescending with your prose. But hey, you keep it up.

Considering a Modi multibit. Confused about how it handles files above 16/44.1? What does it do with a 24/96 or 24/192 file? 1. Play nothing?2. Down sample to 16/44.1? 3. Something else?

Have around 300 hi res files. If it can't play them at all, it wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker. If I like the Modi it would be a stepping stone to more expensive Schiit dacs.

Thanks

I don't know the technology behind it, but the Modi is fully capable of playing up to depth of 24 bits and sampling freq of 192. That's what the website says, and I never had a problem with hi-res files when I used mine (before upgrading to Gungnir MB "Gumby").

I love my Modi Multibit! It plays anything up to 24/192 content just fine. It acts like a non oversampling (NOS) DAC at 24/192.

Bit depth and sample rate are separate issues. Modi MB uses a 16 bit DAC chip, so if you feed it 24 bit samples, the low-order 8 bits are dropped. I believe the current version of Modi MB uses dithering to do this, earlier versions used truncation. As for sample rates above 44.1, all Schiit multibit DACs upsample to a multiple of 44.1 or 48 using Schiit's proprietary "burrito" filter, and send that upsampled version to the DAC chip. I believe the Modi MB upsamples 44.1 multiples to 176.4, and multiples of 48 to 192. So, if you have a 24/192 track, there's no upsampling, and a bit depth reduction from 24 to 16. If you have a 24/88.2 track, you'll get a bit depth reduction to 16 bit, and a 2x upsampling to 176.4. Does this make sense?

Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. What is the first Schiit dac that handles greater than 16 bit?

Thanks for the answers everyone.
