Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Except for yours of course.:ksc75smile::ksc75smile: One should always have hopes and dreams.

I forget who said that or I would give a proper credit.:smirk:

Oh and the first wood here is the infamous lignum vitae, followed by tiger maple, then bloodwood. That would be a great choice for a head shell IMHO. A deep red hue.

For that special tube rack, instead of a mundane multi-level lenticular tiger-maple array, how about a twin-pipe serial-access FIFO design (one pipe for novals, one for octals)?

Unrelated topic (#**$@&”= head fi consecutive-posting rule) @Bowmoreman does the line stage of the DR6R work? stjarna or yggy -> dr6r -> pwr amp? …and two days worth of re-cabling

Sounds fine by me, sounds simpler than the large Pez dispenser I had in mind.

I will try for eight grams, what I want is a hardwood that is light enough for this application, basswood is great but not that pretty. It has to be pretty!

It has to be non-resonant.

Nope, in fact ONLY the phono stage (to tape out, which is fixed level) still works on the Classe’ DR6R… no other outputs work… that was what prompted Kara in the first place… then I packed it all up (hoping that it could get serviced… but the service guy who can do it has had some serious health issues, and so it’s only moved from 57th in queue to 11th in queue over last 20 months…).

I could have used it as phono pre only, but Skoll (and now Stjärna) are much smaller form factor (The Classe’ is full rack width and 7” tall, and has a separate Large power supply box). I may race its phono at some point in the future after Kara F is returned. I can just put it on floor/box close to the TT and re-route cables to race em… from aural memory, I’m pretty sure Stjärna will be the winner if/when I do so… I may still get it rebuilt/recapped, because it was a very nice pre-amp with some wonderful features (mono, reverse, balance, tape loop, bypass mode, and, the intangible that I thought it was seriously good looking).

So got Kara packaged up and shipped off… the guy at the FedEx store remembered me (from when I’d shipped my son his Schiit Gunnr two months ago - he’s like “they ought to think about a different name”… I was: “well, actually it is great marketing. They build outstanding stereo equipment at extremely good prices: good Schiit, get it” - he agreed - Younger guy late 20’s or so)…

Anyways, never ceases to amaze me that Schiit could ship Kara to me with 2-3 day Home delivery FedExp and charge me $27… but for me to ship the same damn thing back (actually lighter because the cord’s not in it) insured for list price cost $80+ for 5 day delivery)… Speaking of huge company business practices…

Ah, well… gets to them on Monday.

So I’m officially completely and utterly devoid of any tunes for the foreseeable future, unless one counts my Bose gaming headset driven from a laptop… sniff.
Gaming? That's a shock. I can't imagine you playing Fortnite.

It’s called the Bose Gaming headset, it’s really just a regular QC25/30 with addition of a microphone extension… Yeah, I don’t do any gaming anymore. Last one was Civilization V… but having developed severe hand arthritis, such “uses” of my wearing out finger joints don’t make the cut… at all. I play chess (which I’ve done competitively since high school)…

But, it is fun to watch my youngest son playing some of his games on his uber rig… I’d just rather listen to tunes, have Bismarck on my lap, and a nice beverage at hand.

You mean you don't have any Carolina Blue wood? How disappointing. I suppose I could color it.

Well I certainly know which woods are most resonant since they are used in acoustic guitars.🤪 Many metal head shells are resonant I would think and some probably more so. I will be able to test resonance as I test various hardwoods and I am certainly not going to use ash, spruce, cedar, mahogany, or specific rosewoods.🤪 If I am forced to use physics I will, but I won’t like it.😜 It would be like Cowen using math.

That would be scary. And probably painful.

But no math required: maple is the best sounding wood.

Yep, rocking a cheap metal headshell at the moment, and with the Hana EL the inner groove distortion is quite pronounced.

In my experience, wood headshells allow me to run a cart with a bit more effective mass than ideal, allowing for more bass heft while taming the resonances.
