Yeah I thought of that but running the signal through two active gain stages doesn't sit well with me. That's why I was looking if any of the HPAs includes a bypass mode.
It seems there are only two preamp sections with both balanced pre out and balanced headphone out. Mjolnir 3 (without remote) and Ragnarok 2 (don't need the amp part).
I could drop the playing around with tubes idea, go for Kara F and settle with the unbalanced output.
If the whole new design forkbearded Mjolnir Jason dreamed about in the last video should ever surface, it would be an upgrade option.
In my experience cueing a unipivot arm by hand on a suspended deck is like trying to balance an upturned broom on a stack of Jello - a lever helps to stabilise the broom aspect - BUT - they often sound amazing once you have !!
And yeah, those 70s direct drives with high-compliance carts were definitely a *moment*, but once you experience a solid belt-drive + MC setup, there’s just no going back. It’s like tasting really good espresso after years of diner coffee—suddenly, the world makes sense.
I inherited a Dual 701 DD with a Shure V15 III from 1975, and with a few parts replaced, it's running just fine for me. Would that fall into your grouping? Curious only, and will not be offended at all if it is. Can you articulate what I might gain with something newer/better? I'm maybe more for the nostalgia and am trying to rebuild my rock/metal collection from 80's-90's while adding new stuff like Nightwish, Delain, Wihtin Temptation, Dream Theater etc. So perhaps I won't hear the subtleties... curious if shoukd consider trading up. (And I do like good espresso, but sometimes the audio budget is only "diner"!)
I wish it did when we were there (Cologne) in early December, at least then the cold could be rationally explained. For the love of Schiit, it was cold!
* Cold for us, not for @Bowmoreman and others in the Northern climes.
Decided to reintroduce one of my Gjallarhorns into my main chain with Vali 3 performing preamp duties.
Qobuz>Wiim Ultra>Yggdrasil+ MIB>Vali 3(12AU7 flavor of the week)>Gjallarhorn>Starry Night V1 (first run)

So for me - at that time and of course going from now very distant memories - the DD’s I had experience with (including Duals, Garrard changers, Thorens and assorted direct drives like Technics and others whose name escapes me now… simply didn’t do imaging and soundstaging and “space”/(some call it bloom)… all had noticeable rumble to a greater or lesser extent. The first table I heard all these subtle differences on (they weren’t so apparent on the rock LP’s of the day to me) was the Rega Planar 3 with an RB300 arm. So THAT is what “pace” and “drive” are! It was literally, I didn’t know what I was missing until I actually heard it; it was literally my gateway drug into the high end. IIRC I switched to belt-drive and that Rega in 1984 IIRC.
When I then subsequently experienced an Oracle (with a Koetsu), I was completely and utterly hooked. @bagwell359 knows that system. Moved further on from the Rega, first with that exact Oracle when its previous owner moved to the OG VPI - he wanted a linear tracking arm - the Souther TriQuarts and they didn’t fit on Oracles - then ultimately to SOTA. After the Rega, I grew tired of isolation issues (during those times, renting wood floor New England walk ups) and switched to suspended designs. Always liked VPI’s (friends in our listening group mostly standardized at the time on them (Rajiv, Joe, Arthur, @bagwell359); but I preferred the extra isolation of the SOTA. Just seemed quieter to me. Blacker blacks if that makes any sense.
I make no claims about today’s latest/most expensive rigid turntables, of which I have no direct experience. One of these days gotta get over to Fidelis and check out the Pure Fidelity line (gorgeous) and the modern incarnation of the Thorens.

I also liked the Hana SL
However, I now prefer the sound of AT MC carts.
I started with an ART9 XI which I really liked, and then 'upgraded' to an ART 20, which I absolutely love

The only two DD I had was the Kenwood KD-500 & JVC xxx in the early 80's. Even though the KD-500 was considered quite good, it was a major step down from the Ariston RD-11S (before) and the Oracle Delphi 3 (after). I sponged both of them from my memory (probably less than 1 yr combined) It had my JVC-UA7045 (VTA adjustment during play S arm) on it. Agree with this comment.

Pretty much agree. My secret for TT's was I always had them in either an adjacent room or a closet from '82-'16. Never used a SOTA, so I can't comment on that comparison.
