Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I'm looking closely at all my subs to see what can be gotten rid of. They're death by 1000 paper-cuts. Software subscriptions get under my skin like no other. Video streaming services have lost their value now that they're being enshittified with ads, substantial price increases, shady practices (looking at you, Amazon), reductions in what's available in their libraries, and general "we have you hooked, now for the rent-taking and gouging". The land-grab time is over for streaming. Now it's all about "shareholder value" and bonuses for the executive teams.
The only monthly subscription I have is Qobuz.

I love the convenience of having access to such a huge library, and the sound quality is generally pretty good.

However, I rarely use it, as I prefer the sound quality from ripped CDs on a networked hard drive, physical CDs…and vinyl.

So, for me, the monthly cost of Qobuz is hard to justify, but my spending decisions on audio gear and music have never been troubled by objectivity.

Buying expensive new vinyl and a completely new vinyl playback system in the last couple of years, says it all really

I'm also of the belief that, generally, there is a law of diminishing returns and much that is out there in the world of audiophilia is overpriced to the point of insanity ($120,000 speaker wire, or $10,000 Ethernet cables, anyone?). Yes, you need to spend a bit on the core bits and pieces to elevate the sound and experience, but very good sound can be had relatively inexpensively. I'm grateful to have what I own (many audio snobs elsewhere would sneer and pat me on the head, but whatever) and for companies like Schiit that price their unique offerings so more people can enter the hobby and experience what others pay 5-10x as much to hear and be wowed.

Edit: as others have recently spoke of, take the time to place room treatments, run tools like Audyssey, and if you're so inclined, get a calibrated measurement microphone and learn how to use Room EQ Wizard.
I agree up to the point of "use Room EQ Wizard", that is a big nono for me.
Used DIRAC room correction a few years back, but for me all DSP is extremely tiring to listen to for longer span of time.
I just replaced 10 ga. Western Electric tinned copper with this cable. I am amazed with the increased detail.
Hope you didn't spend the insane amount of money on the originals.

I'm genuinely curious regarding why you are opposed to REW? Using measurements and adjusting settings accordingly in my SVS subwoofer app made a clear improvement, along with subwoofer placement, of course. Sometime before Christmas I'll have a go at it with the rest of the system.

Audyssey (AFAIK) doesn't do annoying DSP-ish things like what digital filters do, which I also loath. My understanding is that it measures the sound reflections and time that signals from each speaker take to reach the listening position and adjusts timings (oversimplified as I'm sure as heck no audio engineer) to optimally ensure sound reaches the primary listening position at the same time.

Last weekend I was listening to music in my speaker setup (all-speaker stereo - that odd configuration sounds best for my specific hearing - in a 7.1 system) and as I bent forward slightly to pick something up off the coffee table the sound was suddenly clearer. Move my head back up, it was duller. Weird. The prior weekend I had run Audyssey after making a few small changes to the room. I forgot to upload the new room model to the Denon amp. Once I did that (and made the requisite speaker size settings and bass cut-over changes) the sound was <chef's kiss>. Clear, balanced, sounding as it should like I was in the room with the musicians. I even listened to some music in 2.1 with my Wharfedale fronts, which I might do more of.

(Disclaimer: that said those who can still do arcane crap from forever ago are increasingly, and insanely, more valuable; wish I could still code JCL)
While I don’t miss cobol, and almost quit the profession at year zero when assigned mark iv reports as an intern, I wonder why GDGs didn’t make it over to the modern era, yet regular expressions did. But don’t take my bait on reg-ex, it does serve a purpose but it’s inventor sure has inflicted pain on ALOT of programmers thru the years.

…and my brain went to the Doublemint twins!
🤪 well I was born under the zodiac sign for twins, Gemini. My mind would have gone there as well.😀

Nice! Can always count on you for great selections. Last cut on album led me to this:IMG_0437.jpeg
I really like your gear layouts. Long interconnects must be going from your turntable to its preamp? Or do you stick with headphones and all is on that side of the room?

COBOL was hard?

Seriously?

I compiled routines that were literally” Perform SEX until SATISFIED.

Dumbest language I ever learned, ashamed to admit it.

Seriously

Arcane things like designing tube amps? 🤪

should be fun to try.😉 IMG_8571.jpeg I can't wait for the extraordinary improvements.

Those cd's were a huge money-maker for the store I worked at.
We carried all of them...

This one,
The XLO one,
The Chesky one,
The Stereophile one and a couple more that I can't remember the names of.

Funny thing is, I don't own any of 'em

I'll hold out for the 60 minute version. At my age every minute counts.

Back in the good ol' days, you had to have one of these to obtain your audiophile license.

Room EQ Wizard, better known as REW, is acoustic measuring software. It is not DSP hardware/software. It's also free...

Pfft!😤 .... with some Marilyn Manson playing, a system can be broken in within 63 seconds .... 😖😱
