Update: Virgin Music Store on Market Street now carries 3x Grado SR60 and 3x SR125 on their second floor electronics shelf for $69.99 and $139.99 respectively. Attached to the rack is two laminated sheets of paper that apparently have award reviews on them - how else would they get an average consumer to buy a headphone that looks retro like a Grado?

San Francisco Stereo only carries Grados. Same with Harmony Audio.

House of music only has the Senn HD280, HD580, and HD515 from what I can see through the window (I go to Trader Joes all the time).

The Cambridge Soundworks chain (there are numerous locations in the Bay Area) carries Grado headphones, only the SR-60 through the SR-125 or 225 I believe. I actually got a pair of SR-80's through them last winter for $80+tax, which is far less than the normal retail price of $95 (which almost everyone charges).

http://www.musicloversaudio.com in Berkeley (and now in the city too) is an excellent audio store, but like SF Stereo they only carry Grado phones...

Does anyone know where I would be able to try out some K1000s in the bay area? I have been to most of the stores I know of in Marin without luck.

That being said, Access to Music in San Rafael had Grados up to RS-1 this past spring, and Bananas At Large, also in San Rafael, had a lot of under 200 dollar cans. They included DT770, MDR7506, MDR7509, some Sennheisers, and probably some other stuff.

Actually, it's not too late to provide comments that are of help. After a year in Asia and a couple in the Midwest, I'm back in the Bay Area once more. So pointers to stores are still welcome!

Anyone know of a place to try mid range headphones? I'm thinking AD700, A700, HD555, DT 770/80 pro, etc. Anywhere in the bay area is fine.

I'm perfectly comfortable necroing this thread for the 5th time in about 8 years....lol. I too am looking for good stores in the north bay where I can audition some cans. sub'd ^_^ There doesn't seem to be much to choose from.

The Guitar Center on Van Ness used to let you demo all of their headphones, but last time I was there they didn't let me. Not sure if the guy just didn't want to deal with me, or if it is a new policy. They carry a few Beyers, some AKGs, and lots of DJ-type headphones. 
 
There is a store called Music Lovers on Bush and Fillmore that has pretty much the whole Grado lineup in store available for demo. 
 
If you make it down to Mountain View, there is a store called Audio High that has floor samples of lots of Sennheisers and the LCD-2 (maybe the LCD-3 as well -- haven't been back since it was released).

World of stereo 2 on Market Street actually had a good selection of headphones. Carried quite a few models from AT, Shure, and Pioneer, though they only had 1-2 models for ultrasones. Didn't ask for a demo but they had good prices. It was my first time walking in there and after a couple minutes shooting the breeze with a clerk he offered to sell me the m50's at below amazon pricing.
