Having owned the Samson SR850s for a couple years, I've really liked them, but am itching for a bit more bass. I originally got the SR850s for the soundstage for gaming, but now I could care less about gaming, although I worry closed headphones may be too muffled and bad for movies, which I watch a lot of.

Simply, if there's something that has similar sound/sound stage to the SR850/HD668B, but with a bit more bass, I would love that.

I've got a Xonar DGX to amp it up a bit around $100 to spend.

Any help would be appreciated!

Might be able to get a used (Massdrop) AKG K553 Pro headphone.
Closed headphone, but has a sound stage/surround sound more like an open headphone.
Easy for the Xonar DGX to drive them.

Thank you for the replies, really appreciate it.

If it's anything, here's my EQ settings:

I have those settings with music like this in mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrR1TGQY20Y&feature=youtu.be

If I leave it default, everything just sounds muffled. The highs didn't seem high enough and the lows weren't strong enough. I read about "v-shaped" sound signature and it appears I am one of the people who likes that, lol.

Anyway, I am really interested in the Philips and if the HD681 has significant more bass, that'd be good too.

How does the SHP9500's bass compare to the HD681? I really like the look of the Philips and it just looks better quality than the HD681, but obviously it will come down to sound.

Philips SHP9500 (may not have enough bass for you) and Superlux HD681 Evo (Evo has significantly more bass than the 668b). Both are within your budget.

When you mentioned that the HD681 EVO has abundant bass extention in my previous thread, do you mean like how I have bass boosted in the EQ currently?

To add: I have no problem hearing all the different bass notes in this song, and they cause a bit of vibration that I can really feel, but I want more.. heh :p

Did you disable the motherboard's on-board audio, in the BIOS, when you installed the Xonar DGX?

Have you tried the Unified Xonar Drivers?

I am using UNI drivers, I will double check my BIOS for onboard audio.

Edit: "HD Audio" was enabled on my mobo, I disabled it, reinstalled drivers, no difference in sound.

According to these frequency graphs, wouldn't the HD688B have better, or at least stronger, bass than the Philips?

I've bought both the HD668B, SR850 and SHP9500.
The HD668B started malfunctioning less then two months after I bought it.
And I gave away the SHP9500 & SR850..
The SHP9500, if I remember right, had a fairly decent amount of bass.
Maybe even a little too much for my tastes.

I found these graphs from "diyaudioheaven":

HD681-EVO

SHP9500

It looks like SHP is lacking a bit in bass, the review says "Bass wise it is similar to AKG K500 / ATH AD700", which I know the AD700 has very weak bass.

So it looks like I might be leaning towards the HD681-EVO.

I own the AD700, yes they do lack bass.
The SHP9500 has a fair bit more bass then the AD700.

I gave away my HD681-EVO, clamped too tight on my headphone, so gave them to my 11 year old nephews.
But otherwise nothing else negative to say about the HD681-EVO.

I've been looking into the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250 ohm, what do you think of them?

From what I've been reading, they have v-shaped sound (which I imagine I would like, considering that's what my EQ settings are like) and quite a bit of bass for an open can.

Does the K553 have more bass though?  I'd have to listen to them again, but memory says "definitely not."  SR850 surprised me with how much bass they have.  Maybe it's mostly mid-bass, but it's bass.

If the OP wants bass, EVO has bass.  The original red 681 probably has more bass than SR850/668b too, but that's just an educated guess.  Can't beat the price on that one.

SHP9500 has more bass than many people give it credit for, but it's still not for people who want bass.

A DGX isn't enough for a DT990 250.  It might sound "pretty good," but it's not recommended.

Am I reading right that this thread was started 13 hours after your other one? http://www.head-fi.org/t/803251/samson-sr850-upgrade

There is a lot Headphones that emphasise on bass. Almost every mainstream headphones designed that way.

Btw SR850 driver is one of the biggest driver available in the market (a 50mm diameter unit). It should have the potential to throw bigger bass easily. Bigger driver are usually designed for low frequency. Have you tried EQ-ing?
