After reading about the controversy and reviews and such, i decided that i would purchase the dvd. I, of course, had to order it from the UK considering that the US version is out of print.

The movie has been banned and then unbanned in certain countries (i believe that it is still banned in the US), i am not really sure about the details though. Also, i believe the Director was shot the day before the premiere of the movie Salo.

Well, about the movie:

At first, i was kind of confused, and didn't really know what was going on. But after a while i kinda realized what was going on.
Sorry, but i don't really want to go into detail as to what happened and i don't want to post a spoiler either. I guess i will just tell you some points about the movie then.

The whole movie was very strange, disturbing and also sexual.
It is not for the weak hearted. And it should be seen from open minded eyes.

I don't really know what else to say. Umm, i searched the forums for a thread about this, and i found nothing, so i thought that we all should discuss this movie.

That movie is based upon one of Marquis de Sade writings. Director Passolini turned it into a critique of fascism and he was very effective into doing that. But that movie is not something to go take to mama's home for the weekend. It depicts some of the most deviant pervertions known to mankind. But that's not the reason I would not recommend it. When I saw it the first time I tought it was very heavy and artistic, but now I think it depends too much on shock value. By the way, they say one of the reasons Passolini was killed was because this movie.

It was probably indeed quite a shocking movie when it was released. However, it would be considered rather tame by today's standards in terms of shock value. I personally found it to be a shallow and pretentious film. Salo's claim to fame is mainly its controversiality. Criterion had released it for a time on DVD before the publisher discontinued it. I believe Passolini's widow holds the rights to the movie but has decided not to re-license it. Prices on eBay have been known to exceed $600 for a sealed copy.
