if you own/owned the rs-1's and gs1000's would you sale them to raise funds to buy the ps1000's? would you be happier with just the ps1000's over the other two?

are the ps1000's that much better then gs1000's?

Sir, have you ever listened to PS1000?

Regardless of the price, PS1000 are the best Grado (with exception of Joseph Grado) available, absolutely phenomenal among other John Grados. But the problem is that (like rest of Grado) PS1000 are the most overpriced headphones ever you can purchase. Simply T1 and HD800 destroy PS1000 without sweat.

So, if you really LOVE Grado, you may want upgrade into PS1000. But you may want to keep RS-1 because some people seem to prefer into-your-face (i.e no soundstage) sound.

But this is from a person who thinks that all Grados are overpriced, so take this as grain of salt.

I like the RS1s (own) and the GS1000s (used to own) a lot but find the PS1000s (own) a significant step above in general technical capabilities over both. I do think they are much more 'neutral' than the other two and while they still retain a Grado sound, ultimately they are a different flavor. If you like the PS1000s flavor, then technical improvements will be very rewarding but it is possible that you still prefer the RS1s and GS1000s. There is occasional reference to the PS1000s are just GS1000s with metal cups slapped on. Based on what I am hearing with the PS1000s and my extensive experience with the GS1000s, that seems highly unlikely to me.

For me personally, I would choose the PS1000s over the RS1 + GS1000 combo. If I were you, I would do my best to get some good audition time with the PS1000s before making a decision.

Good luck!

Yeah, I really do not agree with that statement. I think they are all in the same class from a technical standpoint. I definitely preferred the PS1000s over the T1s while I had them and think the Grados have a slight leg up in terms of detail retrieval and imaging. And then I would give a slight advantage to the HD800s over the PS1000s in those two same categories plus the amazing soundstage. Still, I prefer the overall sound signature of the PS1000s. The HD800s just sound a bit too bass shy and dry with an ever so slightly deadened decay to me. If you like the more romantic GS1000s and RS1s, I would guess you might prefer the T1s or PS1000s. The T1s certainly make a better bang-for-your buck and I do think the PS1000s are way too expensive.

Problem is there isn't such place to audition such overpriced headphones.

Hell, most of high-end audio retailers refuse to put GS1000 as sample for audition (such as one close to my house; all they had up to were SR-325 and below, and I saw a salesperson shuddered when I "just" asked for auditioning them), let alone the headphones which are 700$ more expensive.

Yes, bass from PS1000 is indeed amazing. But the problem is that's all you get from it when compared to T1 and HD800. And after a while I just can't enjoy the music due to that massive bass response (and also massive weight of the headphones does not help either.)

At least it is not as bloated as PS1.... Well, as I said, these are good choice for Grado lovers who are still looking for ultimate Grado sound after RS-1 and other high-end Grado.

Indeed there is some extra love in the lower end, but they are really made for low-level listening and think it is not overpowering at lower volumes. Well, I have a higher tolerance for bass than many around here and am pretty comfortable with it any any volume :) Again, detail retrieval and imaging are incredible and I think they sound simply gorgeous with classical, jazz, vocals. Neutralish but just slightly ethereal. I generally prefer that kind of sound for classical and vocals than straight-up analytical. Again, if the OP is into the RS1s and GS1000s, the PS1000s are slightly in line with that.

The fit and comfort are no picnic but pretty much in line with other Grados to me. The weight is less bothersome to me than the scratchy pads.

I recently put some steel structural supports on my plastic headphones, and was expecting a very subtle difference, if anything. The difference was far from subtle. From now on, if I ever purchase another pair of headphones, they'll need to be directly coupled to a heavy, well damped metal structure. The PS1000 is one such contender, so long as one can accept listening at lowish volume as Gu Sensei said.

I don't know about the best Grado if you're considering Grado sound sig. It is definitely the most detailed, balanced and has the best soundstage, but it isn't what I would call a "Grado", it has a completely different sound from the typical Grado sound.

RS1 and HF2 are the two best Grados by far that actually sound like the stereotypical Grados.

Never heard any of them, but I would not sell them to get the PS1000. The RS-1 to me just looks wonderful and from the descriptions people give it, I would never want to let it go. The GS-1000 are IMO, the best looking headphones that I have ever seen, I would keep them just for that

Sounds silly, yes, but damn they are just so wonderful to look at. I would just save up for the PS1000. I have regretted selling past items just to fund for others, so I am basing my point of view from that.

I was answering his first question, sir. But to answer your question, yes.

Yes, as I said some people would say RS-1 and so forth as best Grado. I don't strongly disagree with your opinion as stated above. As carledwards just answered to my question we hear differently indeed.

Good thing I just bought a pair of the HF-2s then
biggrin.gif
I have a feeling RS-1 would do better with wooden instruments and acoustical music. HF-2 more for metal and hard rock where you need that extra bass, that's why I got them. Well, that and $550usd for a brand new pair is too good of a deal to pass up

Yeah I've heard that while both are AMAZING all around cans, the HF2s are the kings for rock/metal while the RS1s are superior for classical, jazz, etc.

Although I've never heard anyone say anything negative about either, except for "They aren't good for hip hop", but if you listen to hip hop then Grados aren't for you anyways...
