RUSH fans - newbie here

I enjoy the older stuff mostly. Really anything off of Moving Pictures is great. Also, gotta listen to 2112.

I wouldn't recommend any specific singles, since most of the band's best music is in the form of concept albums. I tend to listen to the albums in their entirety. If I had to start my collection over again, I would probably buy Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings first.

Rush is definitely an album band, in that in order to get the real experience out of any of their individual songs, it should be listened to in conjunction with the rest of the album.

With that in mind, I'm going to second 2112 and Hemispheres. I also really liked Fly by Night.

I'm not a huge fan of their newest cd, Snakes and Arrows.

Definitely the 70's early 80's stuff is best.

2112, Hemispheres and Moving Pictures are the most creative IMHO.

Have not cared for much since about Roll The Bones.

YES listen to the albums as a whole. My faves are Moving Pictures, Signals, 2112, Hemispheres. I also like Roll the Bones. The new remastered Signals CD is absolutely spectacular... many kudos to the remix engineers!!
Snakes and Arrows has some really good, insightful. honest and poetic lyrical content. The sound is not great and I haven't spent much time studying it yet but it seems pretty good. Not great like the albums listed above.

What everybody else here said. They do know what they're talking about

I personally prefer the earlier stuff, as well. 2112 was the first Rush album I ever listened to in it's entirety and the title track has a cool sci-fi storyline w/expert musicianship. If you're looking for more of a conventional type of album (made up of "singles"), I'd recommend Fly By Night to start out with, although there are a few pretty long singles on it!

Heck, most of the Remasters can be had brand new for ~ $9 each, so you should just buy them all (or ask Santa for them)...

Fly by Night will give you a great feel for Rush. 2112 as mentioned is a can't miss album if you like Fly by Night. From there I would try All the Worlds a Stage. Neal Peart (drummer) at his finest about 9:15 into "Working Man" and over all a great album. But then again I haven't personally heard a bad Rush album (bad mastering on several but the music is timeless).

What would you guys recommend to someone who's never been able to "get into" Rush? I've heard plenty of their songs, don't hate them, but haven't been compelled. Which album would be good for repeated listens until they catch? I did the same with Radiohead - they took awhile to catch on, but they're working into my playlist now. So where to begin with Rush?
