I do marathon training, which means long slow weekend runs and this is the perfect opportunity to listen to high quality sound for 2 - 3 hrs. Obviously while running we need a small MP3 player (viz Flash and not hard drive), no capacity to carry portable amps, and the large headphones are no good. Further, in case of rain, dont want to break the bank with expensive stuff.

Today I just got blown away using my latest rig, which was a 16 Gb Zen together with Koss Porta pro headphones. With WMA at 192 there is obviously a large library and the DJ function on the player kept me pleasantly entertained with high quality sound.

My experience with running headphones is as follows:

  1. Never use the supplied earphones
  2. Tried IEM (Superfi 5) and could not get comfortable with the in ear experience
  3. Initially was using Senn PX 100, this was better than PX - 200 I tried.
  4. Koss 75 performance was good but only when held against ears. the supplied clipons did not achieve this
  5. the Porta pro is a step up again, with great highs and full bass.

For players, I initially used the samsung range, using Yep F1and then the U3. These were small players but dont sound as good as the zen. I like that the creative players support Audible, samsung does not, so will in future be listening to audio books on my run. Creative have just come down in price and was able to get the 16 GB around the price previously for the 8 GB.

this is a newbie post, any ideas on further improvements to the above, many thanks.

I agree with the Yuin buds, but you better not have small ears or they might hurt to wear them.

Theres a PMX100 neck band. Don't know if that would be any better. Probably something of an earbud that clips to the ear would be better. I had bought of philips buds that stayed great. Gave them away though as the sound wasn't all that great.

you could probobly use a sony A818 which is nice and small combined with a PMX100 or the new yuin canalphones (well, its still a bud, but it has a canalphone attachment)

Thanks Guys, I have followed up the leads in this discussion and it does appear that it is worth looking at the Yuins, and with no amplification, it seems like the PK-2 is the way to go. PK-1 requires an amp to sound good, which is too much to take running.

Yes looks like there is not a lot to choose from

OTOH - for me canalphones are totally out. Even the JVC marshmallows become very noisy... when running even though they are not even IEMs. Walking or gym is fine with them though and I have yet to do the Kramer mod!

P.S. Just curious... I see in ur sig - u have Go-vibe v7/v5 and v4 ?
How come?
I just purchased one from a fellow headfier (v5)!

I'd like to get some headphones for running/working out as well.
Though anything that isolates very well is out of the question, for both safety and SQ. I don't want to be running around on the streets with full isolation, and any body vibrations and my heartbeat will make listening impossible. I'm thinking the pmx100 or yuin series might do well.

Due to male variation of prominent female problem like shoeitus or handbagitus. Get one, like it, another one comes along, nominally better, youve got to have it, much easier to buy than to sell. Should update my info as I also have the corda move gen 1.
