I posted this at the end of a thread about my attempts to get an Asus Xonar s/card in winDoze7 to perform as well as it does in linux (Mint18) - ie to output more "correct" digital packets - which hasn't had any replies yet
- so will post this again on its own.
Why ever did Sennheiser stop making the RS-220s??
Sure they are a little "tacky" design-wise, they do tend to drop-out a little more at ranges over ≈10m, and there are some factors in their configuration/setup which could perhaps be better.
But, as a discerning baroque music lover, they are the wireless cans I've been waiting for for all these years!
I can simply no longer be bothered with being "tied-down" by wired cans and for years now I've had/used Sennh wireless ones.
But until now they've all had THD figures of only <.5% - whereas the RS-220s are <.1% - and you can surely hear the difference!!
Apparently they have the same drivers as the 600/650 wired cans and it sure sounds like it - they produce a detailed, deep, and immersive soundstage!
Listening to my previous-best ones (a pair of RS-185s fed SPDIF optical) now sounds like listening through a cottonwool blanket!!
It's interesting/amusing that the guy I bought my pair of HD-650s from a few years ago was selling them because he'd gotten a pair of RS-180s and had found that he just wasn't using the 650s much any more - but in the years I've had them (the 650s) I would probably only have used them 3 or 4 times myself
.
I've now gotten myself 2x pairs of 220s from the 4thReich - one pair new at a discounted/justbearable price (350$4thR), and another pair very cheaply via ebay in almost-new (only 1 or 2 hours usage) condition and with all original packaging etc etc.
And, apart from a couple of pairs of RS160s for "low-fi" uses (TV etc) where their rechargeablebattery/portability is quite useful, I'm finding that these will probably be the only cans I'll need!
But, AAMOI, are there any wireless cans around yet that are better SQ-wise than the Sennh 220s?
