HI: I was hoping to use my RS-1 for home and for portable use. In my home rig that has a better source and much better amp the RS-1 is really sounding great at a high potential that it is able to sound. Then when I use the RS-1 in my portable rig that uses a minidisc at 5 m/w out put with my transit meta42 portable amp It seems to sound not much better than my SR-225. It seems that the RS-1 are source and amp dependent to get better sound out of them. Now the SR-225 are great sounding cans but I expect better sound with my RS-1. My SR-225 seem to go very well with my portable rig and sound great on it plus they are smaller than my RS-1 and very portable for me because of size and weight. They are a little lighter than the RS-1. I a/b the two cans on the portable rig and find that the only real advantage the RS-1 have over the SR-225 is in sound stage. It seem that the RS-1 is ready for a better source and better amp to do its thing better than the SR-225. So I fine that fore portable the SR-225 are awesome cans with great sound and comfort and less source and amp dependent that the great RS-1. So now I just can't seem to live with out both the RS-1 and the SR-225. Also for the money the SR-225 are a best buy and sound almost as good as the RS-1 on my portable rig at 3 times less money. But of course when plugged into my home rig the RS-1 are worth every penny because of the awesome and incredible sound that they put out. So now I am calling the SR-225 a pore mans RS-1. LOL. Now when I plug in my SR-225 into my home rig they sound great even awesome but not as awesome as the RS-1. The 225 have great detail and bass slam but the RS-1 have better detail and are more accurate and have incredible tight low thunderous bass slam. If one has little money the SR-225 are a great buy but if you have lots more money then you can't beat the RS-1 for your home rig.

As a trial, you might like to try a cut-off Grado pad if you have any DIY capabilities. I thought they worked better than the alternatives. Cut off the area which is 'hardened' at the tip of the pads, i.e. just above the height where the little cuts in the standard pad end.

Regular pad top, cut pad bottom.

Lou,
I know that the SR-225 is the best buy in Grado. I had SR-80, 125, and SR-225. The SR-225 is a big step over the SR-225. Lots and lots of detail with amazing punchy bass. It's a snap. I feel a bit sad, as I no longer own the SR-125. However, during that time my Meta42 didn't do justice w/ the SR-225. I found out that one of my portable discman paired better w/ the SR-225.

So, lots of enjoyment for you. How about the CD3K vs. RS-1 impression?

Let me know.

blessingx,
Thanks for correction. I probably have/had auditioned more than 25 pairs of headphone, so I can forget things. and, yes, The SR-225 his a significant improvment over the SR-125. I never liked the SR-125, b/c SR-225 sounds so much better.

Are the Grados particularily practical for portable use?

I'm intruiged, but at the same time unsure... I do need some decent portable cans, but am worried about how open the Grados are... and the funny stares that i'd get whilst out and about...

Duncan,
Lou only use his SR-225 around the house. He doesn't use it out on the street or bus. SR-225 is a good sized can, and cord is trouble some. Plus, the look of it.

You will be a popular man in the street in no time.

Thanks for your comments Lou! It really does seemt that the 225s are the sweet spot in the grado line. Every time I see a thread like this, it makes me want to go out and buy a pair to overcome my fear of them.
