Here’s how to get there:

Oooh, that's awesome you guys are bringing the contest back!

I've heard the HE-1 a few times so far but it's magic every time. But, 10 minutes usually does feel like it's just enough of a tease to want to max out a credit card. 😂

United States, CA

Album in full: Death Cab for Cutie - Kintsugi

I was going to go for like some classic rock, maybe the Black Keys, etc.

But Death Cab has a lot of soul in their music, a lot of passion and I think Kintsugi is my favorite album of theirs with every single song being a hit and some of my favorites.

Hello Eric,

Once again, a great opportunity that is being extended by Sennheiser to enjoy the factory experience and the HE-1. I am located in the United States. I would listen to Diamond Mine by King Creosote and Jon Hopkins. It seems befitting to request a Scottish singer & songwriter with an English musician to be listened to on an Irish system. It is one of my favorite albums both in musical content and as an evaluation piece. I'm confident the HE-1 would present the album in its fully glory.

I'm located in San Diego, CA in the United States.

I'm so glad I was able to attend CanJam SoCal 2024 and was lucky enough to book a spot for my first experience with the HE-1. If I had to choose just 1 album to listen to in its entirety, it would have to be Blackbird by Alter Bridge. They are my favorite band of all time and are criminally underrated. This album was my introduction to Alter Bridge and after listening to and loving every track, I had to see them in concert. I've been to two and they are even better live. Mark Tremonti's guitar solos are so incredibly well executed and Myles Kennedy's voice is otherworldly. I think hearing Blackbird on the HE-1 is the closest I could get to recreating that live experience.

Missed the contest last time, but glad I found this post early this time.
Last time I heard the HE-1 was a while back, where I couldn't choose what to listen to, so hopefully this would be my opportunity to listen to albums I'm familiar with.

My favorite album to test gear + enjoy music is En Azul by Witmer Trio. I love most albums released by Sound Liaison, but this album in particular gets my toe-tapping and head-bopping really going. Their recording mic captures the hits of the drums superbly (sound of the piano is fantastic as well), so would love to hear that translated over on the HE-1 system.

Located in US.

If there is one album I'd love to listen to on the HE-1 it would be the Gathering - How to measure a planet.
The album came out in 1998 and marked a turning point for the band. Before their work was dark and heavy. HtMaP was more atmospherical and put Anneke van Giersbergen and her angelic voice in the centre. You could say that the band grew up and went from puberty to their adult form when this album came out, around the same time as I entered adulthood :)
The album is very special for me and damnit I want to experience that "audiophile listens to the HE-1 and sheds a tear" moment (not that I have anything to complain at the moment, but still :p)

I'm located in the US.

The album I would love to try on the HE-1 is Bruckner Symphony 7, Karl Böhm and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

It is rare indeed when an album simultaneously delivers both a performance for the ages AND a recording for the ages. This recording from a live 1977 concert, and released by the Audite label, does both. I've certainly not heard a better rendition of this symphony, and the sound quality is as good as any modern recording. I know, because I've listened to all the Bruckner 7th's released in the last 20 years!

For a large symphonic work like this, I would be listening for how well the HE-1 portrays:
  • the size and expansiveness of the venue
  • the dynamics and power of the orchestra. This symphony has it all, from pianissimo passages to thunderous crescendos
  • the timbre and texture of individual instruments
  • the tonal balance. This symphony has a lot of brass, and rendering these without harshness and honkiness can be a challenge
  • the bass and sub-bass, the lower registers with cellos, double basses, tubas, and tympani.
  • Finally, and above all, how deeply does the HE-1 engage me emotionally.
What a great concept for a contest!

Thank you Sennheiser, it is highly appreciated.

If inconvenient - please delete my post.
Thank you.

Great to see this event comeback!

Album: Koi Baat Chale by Jagjit Singh • Gulzar (https://open.qobuz.com/album/0888880944986)
This is slower paced Indian Classical Music, featuring male vocals. For benchmarking instruments, sitar and piano stand alone in their difficulty for accurate reproduction. The tablas and layering with male vocals involved in this album (eg track Kainat Chale and Sehma Sehma) tests the 'natural sound' voicing, rather than pure technicals which electronic music does quite well. At this level of gear, I expect technicalities to be excellent however there is an 'uncanny valley' for natural tonality and any slight deviation from a masterful timbre becomes very clear with this album. Of course elements of tonality including timbre, texture and the voicing of the house sound contribute to this. Another aspect this album tests is soundstage depth and overall stage expansion (Aap Agar In Dinon Yahan Hote), this track can sound quite congested if the gear isn't up to the task. I encourage anyone who is selected to go to try this album and compare to how it presents on speakers. These two experiences are as different as chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Where does HE1 place on this scale I wonder. I find even flagships e-stats can't capture the humanity or emotion this album has on a simpler WA22+HD600, albeit the soundstage is on the small side. Susvara was close but perhaps on a right amp/DAC combo it may get there. I'm not so sure w/ estats, but perhaps HE 1 can.

Honorable Mention: Shaam Se Aankh Mein Nami Si Hai (track) from Marasim (https://open.qobuz.com/track/10137557)

Residence: Germany, though American by nationality, and Korean by birth.

Album: UI - Celebrity. The song "My Sea" is beautiful. I got to hear it live in LA this summer. The day after, I had a chance to listen to it on the DCA Corina, and it was magical on those headphones, and really took me back to the moment when I was listening to her live. I own the HD600, where UI's voice already sounds fantastic, so expectations are quite high for the HE-1, as it is supposed to be the "one-top" as Koreans would say (meaning, that it is the singularly greatest).

Such a fun thread, and lots of cool music! From the USA here.

I’ve still yet to lay me ears on the HE-1, but it’s a goal given the HD 650 was my foray into the pursuit of HiFi, and have since added the HD 800 S and IE 900 to my collection $_$

My pick would have to be the COWBOY BEBOP OST from the SEATBELTS, including The Real Folk Blues. Aside from just being fun to jam out, it’s also got such a breadth of musical vocabulary in a single albums worth of music. Yoko Kanno absolutely crushed it.

SEE YOU SPACE COWBOY…

Residence in Germany.
I'd listen to Soen - Atlantis. Because it's an album that's got everything, distorted guitars, melancholic clean guitars, even acoustic ones. A wonderful male voice, forceful, but very emotional. The contrast with the backing vocals...unreal. Classical instruments, being a collaboration...The whole album is just pure emotion, culminating with a cover of Snuff by Slipknot. Whenever I test gear, there has to be at least a couple of songs from this album.

So my first high-end headphone was the 580 back when I joined head-fi in July of 2001. A lot has changed, but I’ve been here for all of it. I’ve never heard the HE-1, so that would be incredible to hear, especially since I’ve been an electrostatic speaker guy for a long time. Why should you pick me? I’m not just a listener but a DIYer (microphones and amps - CFA3, U67 clone, etc.). I bring the perspective of not just a listener but someone that studies, builds, and appreciates what goes into a well-engineered product. If given the opportunity to visit, i'd like to make a photo and video story (where allowed/appropriate) of the fine work that goes into designing and making Sennheiser headphones. What music would I listen to? I’d like Sennheiser’s help! I’m hoping to audition a “pure” chain of music and to listen to music that was recorded by https://mbmmusikproduktion.de/ using Sennheiser microphones. In particular, I like classical music as it’s a very pure method that has minimal processing and can capture amazing depth. PS. I'm from the USA.
