Hi all. I heard of using rockbox as a firmware of a DAP. What does it do and why is it better than the original company's firmware?

for what player? What they do is they modify firmware and add new features.

The last I knew, Rockbox was a firmware for Irivier 1xx and 3xx which added different features. I don't remember exactly what the features were are, but I would speculate that format support and gapless might be included.

If you visit the rockbox web site, there is a table which compares the features between rockbox and the original firmware in the DAP.

Rockbox supports other players beside iRiver. Check the web site for the list of supported players.

it was originally programmed for Archos jukebox players, but since has expanded to some iriver players

This is not true. Initial basic development on the H300 has started, but nothing is for sure yet---- even if it'll ever be finished or functional on the H300. The H100 version is functional, but still in the early stages of development, thus buggy.

Many thanks to the rockbox contributors for their hard work and donations to the community!

This post of mine on the Mistic River site provides links to various sources of information about Rockbox, including the FAQ pages and installation instructions pages.

To correct something that was posted earlier in the thread, Rockbox is not a modification of stock firmware. It is new firmware, written completely from the ground up. On capable hardware, Rockbox features gapless playback, robust OTF playlists, user-configurable while-playing screen, and much more.

As st5150 said, Rockbox has not yet been formally released for iriver, but the port to the H120/H140 is very functional. Work has started on a port to the H300 and to the iAudio X5.
