Last night I upgraded the firmware on my 5th gen iPod to Rockbox. I had been listening to it on my stereo prior to this, and noticed that the sound was pretty smooth and easy to listen to. Being a vinyl guy, this is the kind of sound that I prefer. However, after I flashed over to Rockbox, I hooked it up to my stereo again and noticed that the sound was more aggressive in the treble and just sounded more harsh overall. I developed listening fatigue after only 15 minutes. I'll be doing a full comparison later this evening, listening to one song in Rockbox and then flashing back to the Apple FW to make a real comparison.

I believe by default, treble on the EQ is turned up a few levels, you might want to venture into the settings, and set it to neutral. You WILL find a sound signature you like with Rockbox, it has more tweaks than you can shake a stick at.
