I want to give it a go on my mini - Throughout the installation instructions though, it only mentions USB connection... As my 'pod came with a Firewire connection, can i go ahead with the install or must it be connected by USB?

Just try it and see if it works.

As long as you can transfer files onto and off the iPod, and replace files etc., there shouldn't be a difference. It is just an interface after all.

I just put Rockbox on my Son's 1G mini and I'm pretty sure it looks for the device on the USB ports during the install.

This step of the installation determins which USB port your mini is plugged into:

Quote:

b) Find your iPod
You will perform this and the following steps from the Windows command prompt. Start a command prompt and navigate to the C:\rockbox directory (type C: and press enter, then type "cd \rockbox" and press enter).

You should now plug your iPod into your PC via the USB cable, and type the following sequence of commands:

ipodpatcher 0
ipodpatcher 1
ipodpatcher 2
ipodpatcher 3
(etc)
When ipodpatcher finds your ipod, remember the number you have typed - this will be the number you use to access your ipod in the following steps.

Also worth noting, the mini has to be connected to a USB 2.0 port. USB 1 ports would not work.

Everything is fine until this step -

Quote:

d) Extract the Apple firmware from your firmware partition image. [Back to all users again]
Type the following command to extract Apple's firmware from the bootpartition.bin image file:

ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin

This should create a file approximately 5MB in size called apple_os.bin containing the Apple firmware for your iPod.

I get a message to the effect of ipod_fw is not a valid command...

Then i had a 'moment of clarity' and decided that retrieving the firmware off the mini with ipod wizard was a good way to go - saved it to the desktop and renamed it apple_os.bin, placed it in the rockbox folder but still no dice with the next step -

Quote:

iPod Mini 1G users should type the following:

ipod_fw -g mini -o rockboot.bin -i apple_os.bin bootloader-mini1g.bin

Aaargh!

Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a USB cable then, if that's what's causing the problem - If that's the case, why will it get to this point through the Firewire connection???

Any ideas?
