I just managed to patch up the Rockbox bootload EmCore, mSATA SSD MOD for iPod Classic now works with Rockbox firmware.

For patched firmware download and installation, please check the detailed page:

http://beyondwind.duckdns.org/?page_id=147

Battery life is excellent, >15hrs with Sanyo blue cell. This firmware will run on all iPod classic models, no theoretical limitation on SSD size, tested with Crucial M500 SSD 240GB and 480GB msata using "Green" msata zif adapter. If you have other SSD's, please keep me posted  about your findings. Sandforce based SSD is a no go as I tested. I believe this patched firmware will work better for SD/compact flash setup, but not yet tested.

Is this possible on an iPod classic that does not have an SSD? To run rockbox on it? Just trying to verify for someone and I don't have a classic myself.

For sure you can. Rockbox for iPod classic was originally made available through the emcore bootloader from freemyipod.org. It was futher modified to work with SSD, but the modified firmware will also work for HDD based iPod classic.

Hello all!

Long time lurker, first time poster. I managed to make my way through the 200+ thread that this one spawned from and I am rather astounded at the complexity of mods that exist for the little iPod. I recently was inspired to mod my very own iPod Classic 7th Gen but before I cracked it open I really wanted to make sure all the parts would fit. Here's my (hopeful) setup;

Adapter

SSD
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BQ8RKT4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=R9B51A4ZA5GL&coliid=I38ORRB3VB63WJ&psc=1

I plan to mod the SSD following the directions generously posted by @beyondwind but I've read in a few places that the battery might not be adequate to power the rig. Any word on this from the community? If this is the case does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives?? I was also wondering if this would all fit in the stock case for my 7th Gen.

Any other pictures and helpful hints/tips are welcome.

Thanks!!

If you have a thick backplate for your iPod, then this battery would work with your iPod. It's a 2000mAh battery :D If not get a thick backplate, and this will fit with the mSATA drive.

Also you may want to consider Tarkans mSATA adaptor. The one you have works, but I believe Tarkan has done some work to really improve the design.

Here is what Tarkan said in the comments on his site.

iFlash-sata uses slightly less power, but more importantly has much better jitter and error rate then the cheaper boards – this translates in to less time retrying due to errors etc.

But the overriding factor in battery life is the mSata drive itself – so my board will not be a massive improvement to the time you get now.

Say's on the listing the ship to the uk, so I can't see why Europe would be a problem?  Have you tried contacting the seller?

Cmarti, with the 2000mAh and msata, would you know what kind of run times your getting? I'm in the process of pricing out the 1TB EVO and preordered a Tarken adaptor. Also have a 2000mAh on the way to me.

No idea, it feels like it never drains. I get two or three weeks out of it now that I can't use it all day because of the freaking conference calls! Hehe.
