It seems to me like I'm the only head-fi member who listens to rock guitar... Anyone else ever listen to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, or Jeff Beck? If so, name some tracks (the album they are on) and what you like about them.

mostly Joe Satriani here. haven't heard a Vai song I liked (tried tho!), but well, there ya go. the other two...heard of them, but you can only buy so many CDs, know what I mean? and with Satch, while the playing is meticulous, technique never feels like the main goal.

picking some Satch favourites:
War (Extremist) - just ripping start to finish
Satch Boogie (Surfing) - love his sound on this track. just try and sit still man! frantic!
Always With Me, Always With You (Surfing) - the altime best Satch ballad. just making that guitar cry.
Mindstorm (Strange Beautifull Music) - just a stormin' track, one big whirlwind!
What Breaks a Heart (Strange ...) - another of his great ballads, really varied track, love his sound here.

not sure what to pick from Engines Of Creation, but it's a great album to kick back with. I guess I like The Power Cosmic (both parts) and Slow And Easy best. and I'm missing a few essential albums, but one day..!

Not even likely.

Jeff Beck - "Scatterbrain" -- I love that part where he lets a chord fade to one note and the distortion goes away.

Jeff Beck - "Space Boogie" -- fastest ensemble playing I have ever heard (faster than Al Di Meola's "Race with Devil on Spanish Highway").

Jeff Beck - "Blue Wind", "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" -- lyrical.

Al Di Meola - if you haven't heard of this guy, you owe it to yourself to check out the following classic albums:

Casino, Splendido Hotel, and Elegant Gypsy, and then, if you like those three, check out Electric Rendezvous and some of his more recent stuff (World Sinfonia, Infinite Desire, etc.).

Certain rock guitarists try to control their own destiny (Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, etc.) while lots of great other guitarists stick with their bands. For sheer assault of beautiful and advanced guitar technique (Vai and Billy Sheehan) in a hard rock setting one of my favs is the song 'Shyboy' ..its a Panzer Division of a rock guitar song. But of course there are a zillion examples. YOu thought you were alone here on Head-fi?? Man, you crazy!

Heck.....currently I am playing Jeff Beck's Who Else! disc. I really like:

What Mama Said
Brush With the Blues
Space for the Papa
Angel (Footsteps)
Declan

I have all of Beck's discs. Hardly a bad tune on any of them. For Satch I like

The Crush of Love
Circles

Got all of Eric Johnson's stuff too. My fave track of his is High Landrons of off Ah Via Musicom.
