Why did you keep the PRO and return the DAC?

IMO the Pro sounded superior to the DAC. Some people say there isn't a difference. Listening side by side I heard a difference. I thought the Pro had a silky smooth more refined sound.

... most likely because of a input overload on the V281. A guy said to me that the ADI-2 Pro because it has a fully digital volume control it doesn't matter how loud it is configured as there's no signal degradation (avoids noise and distortion as well) is this true?

I had this little theory of setting up the ADI-2 Pro with an preferred approximate max volume, and then turn the potentiometer on the V281 somewhere between 12 o'clock and 3'clock as normal listening level which minimizes signal degradation on the V281. (pre-gain depending on impedance headphone)

What is your take on this guys?

I think this is a great idea: keep the output volume on the RME sufficiently low to avoid input overload, and then control volume using the V281. The RME engineer sometimes shares his views on the RME forums on proper use and his thoughts about engineering problems like volume control. Here is one of his responses on whether or not digital volume control degrades quality on his products. I've quoted his answer below:

Can you define degrading? And what it really means?

The new manual 1.7 (most probably released today) includes a new chapter where the digital volume control is explained in detail. Talking about volume control in front of the output device there is no need for 32 bit, nor any degradation of the audio signal quality. SPDIF/AES gives you 144 dB of dynamic range (max SNR). With the ADI-2 Pro it means you cannot hear any noise. Now when reducing the level in front of the DAC you still can't hear any noise. Low level signals will vanish below the hearing threshold, but that is the same as when you reduce the signal after the DAC (and is also happening at 0 dB volume - do some real world checks on the maximum dynamic range in hearing in your listening situation).

The often mentioned loss in resolution as 'graininess, low level distortion and loss of background information' simply doesn't exist when digital volume is done correctly. This is explained in the manual by measuring deeply into the noise floor, with signals fully undistorted at -190 dBFS (!). And yes, this is still 24 bit.

Higher quality/bit depths are only necessary within the DAW, to avoid signal loss when you attenuate a lot and later decide to amplify it back to the original level. A totally different topic than a volume control in front of the output device.

I picked up the RME ADI-2 DAC in January of last year as soon as it made its way into the first retail channels. I fell in love with the thing pretty much instantly.

This past week, I finally went ahead and picked up an RME ADI-2 Pro FS.

What an amazing piece of kit!

Things I miss from the ADI-2 DAC:

• IEM output
• Remote
• Black faceplate

The only thing I really miss is that IEM output, and it's mostly because I've also been messing around with the Balanced mode output for my Sennheisers and I'm worried I'll forget to change the volume/Hi-Power mode before plugging my IEMs in.

The sheer quantity of quality options in the ADI-2 Pro FS makes even the ADI-2 DAC seem feature-lite in comparison.

One function that I haven't seen discussed much is the Digital-to-Digital conversion. I sometimes use DACs with either no USB or a less-than-stellar implementation. The ADI-2 Pro FS has about the best USB performance I've ever experienced (alongside the ADI-2 DAC), and you can use it to convert to a digital signal for another DAC. At the moment, I have it connected to an MHDT Labs Orchid via coax and it does very good things for that pairing.

While the firmware versions released a few weeks ago, see

were well received we had overlooked a few smaller issues that were caused by the changes in said firmware. In the meantime we also got notified of two older bugs that - thanks to very detailed user feedback - could be identified and fixed quickly. That brings us to the new DSP versions 94 for the Pro and 29 for the DAC. This update is highly recommended!

Here are the details.

ADI-2 DAC

- The currently loaded EQ Preset stays valid after a reboot (if it wasn't modified). That also solves the EQ Preset name in the new DetailsTop screen to no longer change to 'Manual' after reboot.

- To make ON and OFF messages easier to recognize ON now features a light green background, OFF a light grey one, and OFF and ON are in capital letters which also improves readability.

- Brought back Standby button to interrupt the AutoDark mode.

- Changed 'DIM' to 'Dim'


ADI-2 Pro

- New meter options Pre-FX, Post-FX and Dual now work as expected on the analog inputs in the Global Level Meter screen

- Loading a setup that had Basic mode AD/DA and then an Analog input chosen as source required to load the setup two times in a row to activate the analog input.

- New Remap Keys options Polarity, Crossfeed 1-5 and all DA filters did not work.

- Amber did not show the intended color change when in DSD mode

- A specific setting in combination with Dual Linked Volume (Dual Phones On) caused an invalid Balance value of L850 after reboot (and it sounded like that - screwed).


General

- Added phones removal to interrupt the AutoDark mode.

I did the lazy thing despite usually building my own cables and had Blue Jeans make me one. I think it was the same price as the one linked above.

Just in case someone is reading this later, this is for the ADI-2 Pro. If you want to connect a balanced headphone to the ADI-2 DAC, you need an XLR to 1/4" adapter.

Hi, I remember reading somewhere that this DAC didn't support some flavor of USB so xxx was not possible. I can't find the post and I can't remember any details! Is there any issue with USB support? Does it require dedicated Windows drivers or is it fully functional on Linux etc. with just the native USB support?
