I just found a program for ripping audio from CDs in OS X and it appears to be much better suited to the job than iTunes - it's called Max. I'm checking it out right now, but it's supposed to deal with ripping CDs when you'd get clicks or pops in iTunes.

And it seems to rip faster too

It's done a great job on CDs that iTunes didn't rip very well (e.g. skips in the Lossless files), it does have one drawback though- it doesn't seem to rip CDs that have copy protection very well. I've had some difficulty with some of my Radiohead singles.

Hmm.. looks interesting but how the heck do you use it? I copied the Max folder to my Applications folder and the app crashes immediately upon startup. No error message or anything, it just bounces in the dock for half a second and disappears.

They don't offer any installation instructions, either.

When I used it, all I did was start it up. The first time I had to specify what format I wanted it to do the rips into (i specified ALAC, by default it does WAV I think). Ever since then, I just pop a disc in and it starts ripping it without any input from me.

It may not be giving you an error message on the screen, but it is probably logging the error.
Go and run the Console, which is located in Applications->Utilities.

That lets you look at system logs. Then what you want to look under is ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/. There you should a file called MaxCrash.log or maybe just Max.log. Read it, or copy it and post it here. That'll give you an idea of what's going on.

You may also wnat to let us know what version of OS X you're using and what hardware you're on.

I use MAX too. Seems like its a great app. I rip to ALAC so I can put my music on my iPod. I just need help converting FLAC to ALAC with MAX.

None!
But DiskArbitration, the interface Max use to access CD's, is not available for Mac OS 10.3.
