Hmmm, and we wonder how the RIAA is compensating for the lacking ecconomy...

If it was me I would have flown to RIAA headquarters and kicked someones ass. Its about as legal as suing me over running a search engine. Why haven't they sued google? How can they honestly justify suing this kid for those reasons and then not sue google? Because google has the cash to defend themselves against such ludicrous behaviour most likely. Yes, companies with no social conscience are a great thing.

Friends - at last a really good reason not to live in the US - over here we laugh at those kind of threats and quickly sign on the dole - no-one sues the unemployed - no money in it.

Of course the real trick is to contest the action and on your day in court, defend yourself, and develop the most profound stutter that's ever been witnessed by anyone ever - everyone will get so pissed off there's no way you can get busted.

RIAA totally sucks - stop buying CD's etc in protest and send letters to the music industry explaining why - won't make any difference though.

Ever since the RIAA started doing things other than making shiny metal records, I now buy music either used, or directly from the band.

Edit...

I just donated a couple bucks to this kid's fund on his web site

What the HELL is wrong with the RIAA?? All the guy had was a search engine and they take $12,000 from him. I think EVERYONE should just start getting their music some other way.

Heh, makes me want to move to the States just so I can defend this kid.

I donated some cash. Every little bit helps.

Poor guy.

Yes, the RIAA do equal to **********.

They should concentrate on making a better industry/product than all this stuff that is shoved down our throat by Clear Channel/MTV.

Bring some originality back to music and the buyers may come back.

Makes me want to download all music now.

RIAA = EVIL.

If I say what I wanna say I might get banned, flamed, or be the under suspicion of law enforcement if something ever happens, so I will just agree with Riz.

Can I quote this thread the next time someone complains about Head-Fi's "No discussing ways to illegally download or trade music" rule?

Yes, I am.

I have mixed feelings about the RIAA.

On one hand, I utterly detest their heavy-handed tactics. Ever since the Napster thing, I've avoided buying new CDs completely. It's just my personal way to tell the RIAA to go **** themselves. Once I find a CD I want to buy, I'll take my time and find a used one at a local CD shop or on Ebay.

On the other hand, I respect the RIAA's right to defend themselves against what they see as a dangerous threat to their industry -- mp3s. As long as they are acting within the boundaries of the law, they are completely justified in taking actions like the one against chewplastic.
