I've noticed this in both my newly aquired speaker system (dramatic) and in my headphone system (still very evident). When the Revo output is at full (which is what you'd think to set it at if you're connecting it to an amp) - the highs are harsh and the bass is weak, with the mids seeming bright. Detail and soundstage are great, but these tonal balance problems (especially on the harshness in the highs) can be a real problem.

However, setting the volume control (in windows) to half (or less) and then increasing your amps volume control to reach the same point results in a much improved sound! Fleshed out mids, stronger (yet still tight) bass, and far smoother highs!

I'm basically just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if not try it out and see! The difference was night and day in my brand new speaker setup.

I just tried the same, and have also noticed the differences you mentioned. I'm using a gilmore v2 amp and Audio-Technica ATH-A1000 with my revo. That trick really made the sometimes harsh highs on the AT more pleasant. Overall though it's hard to say which way I prefer. Maxed revo volume seems a little more detailed and half revo seems smoother. I guess it's good to have the option

Thanks for the tip.

Most soundcards should not be set above 3/4 (75%) volume. What's happening is that you are reaching the top of it's rated output where there is some distortion. If you drop/raise it to approx 75% volume you should have clean output and max quality.

Keep increasing the volume then, it's a continuous thing from my experience, the higher the Revo volume, the 'harsher' (yet more detailed) the sound gets. Pick a happy medium for your gear I guess. I would still rather have a consistent balanced sound through the whole volume slider.
