Review: Yulong U100 compact USB DAC/amp
Mar 27, 2011 at 6:29 PM Post #18 of 91
I don't know too much about DAC's, except the basics. I don't understand how sampling, re-sampling, bits per samples, or any of that works, so could you help me?
All my music is 16/44.1K (44,100Hz Sample Rate and 16 Bits per Sample) and mostly FLAC and MP3.
If I decide to purchase a Yulong U100 will it have any sound effect on my music being a 24Bit/96KHz DAC or will it not work and I'd have change my entire Foobar2000 music library in order for the DAC to work OR does selecting the U100 as the playback output device in Foobar do all the work for me? I'm confused, please help me.
Thanks,
Andrew

I'm not aware of any 24/96 or 24/192 DACs in existence that don't support lower resolution files as well. They often even support lower than 16/44.1 just in case: For example, the Cambridge DacMagic and the Bryston BDA-1 both have dedicated LED indicators on the front panel for "32kHz" signals. Unless you deliberately downsampled something as a test, I can't think of a reason why you'd have audio in a 32kHz sample rate. Maybe from a cheap portable digital voice recorder?

So the short answer is yes, you would be fine with any DAC on the market today playing back your library of music with no conversion needed.

Does anyone of the U100 owners also have a Xonar Essence ST(X)? If so, how do they compare? I'm still in doubt between the two.. I'm mainly intrested in the DAC part of the two devices as I'll be using a M-Stage for headphone amping.

If you are just looking for a DAC look at the HRT Media Streamer.  Its a straight DAC, is on par or better than the U100 and is cheaper.  Only thing this has is the headphone jack and volume knob which it sounds like you dont need.

Just my .02

I bought the Yulong u100 after a review on headfonia. It still needs to break in a bit, it does sound better than my auzentech x-plosion soundcard.

Attention to buyers: It's not shielded from electronic interference. If my mobile phone is close to it, it makes strange noises.
