I picked up a vintage Philips Pdcp from ebay-austria for about 30 dollars. Model AZ6801. Absolutely new in the box with all original accessories, including philips headphones, nice plastic cover...etc.
The thing is big. Very big: 17x13,5x4 cm !!! She needs 6 batteries AA that made her heavy. AZ6801 looks like a grey brick of plastic. Some of you may find it ugly. But there is one important thing about this player: It's a killer !
Real three dimensional sound. Very powerful headphones output (louder than D25 ). No Megabass, no Bassexpander, no DBB...just the real sound of a well balanced bass. Very impressive and present. I think it's the only philips PDCP that has no DBB... Anyway you wouldn't need DBB on this player, because bass are already deep and punchy enough ! In my Grado sr225, sound is everywhere: In front of me, far on the right side, far on the left side and seems sometimes that it comes from the ceiling ! I could'nt believe my ears: In comparison to my D25, my Philips AZ6840 and my denon DCP-30, az6801 produces a real beautiful sound, very natural. I can't really compare to my other Cd players because what I hear is one or two step above, and everything sounds better in the az6801.
I compare the line out with these of my old Philips CDplayer CD460 (fourfold oversampling): The same sound ! Exactly the same ! Just a little less powerfull on the PDCP, but no doubt: It is one of the best Philips PDCP ever made. I'm not sure of the year, but manual says something like: " '89 "...
Now pictures:
The grey brick
Basic functions. No light in the screen.
Eveything in this player is made of solid plastic
Difficult to read on this pic: You have to manually power off the player. Left position of the cursor: Hold
Line out and Input for AC Adaptor (new in the box): 9V-400mA stabilised.
Two headphones output !!! When you plug a second pair of headphones, level decrease a bit.
Somewhere is written: "made in Hong-Kong".
The nice (and new) cover and headphones. Headphones are not that bad and seem to be a "high end model" at the time: Very elegant and light, precise in the high and medium. But almost no bass. My porta pro does a better job, but I can't hear it above 4 because the player is very very loud.
It looks like a small bag. Too big for my pockets...
I love this player. Too big to jog with...not a problem for me. As a musician I travel a lot in a tourbus, so the AZ6801 is quietly sitting next to me. Oh... One more thing: It does'nt skip easily.
Pick one if you can. you won't regret the journey.
