I'm dreamin but wouldn't it be nice if everyone could own a pair of er4 canal phones when they review or compare headphones?

can anyone think of a better reference phone or one with the most neutrality that simply lets the source speak for ifself.

yes, it would be nice everyone to have er4 headphones, I think, but would it be Still Cool? Not rare anymore and that's why probably not so cool, you're right you're dreaming cause not too many people can afford such headphones.
As of me, I am dreaming now having one of those er4 phones...
Do you have them RobertR? Do you clame them to be your favourites?

I am not sure if canal phones can be used for *the* reference for regular phones. Whilst Etys are very good, it seems they have a completley different *agenda* from the rest. (isolation being one of 'em )

What helpfull in any reviews, for me, is what reviwers use everyday as their *reference*. ( including electronics and cabling )

From there you can guess what they think it's good which may not necessarily agree with everyone's taste. In which case, you just skip the reviews or at leat you can put a particular review in the right context.

Hi-fi is very subjective. There shouldn't be a set reference to fit everyone.
