Resume:

The Meelec AirFi AF9’s were a good surprise to me. The whole equipment is really easy both to configure and to use it on a daily basis. The sound is very pleasant, both for calls and music. For the cost, 50$, I find them really competitive. I didn’t any major flaws in it, so, I’m pretty satisfied! They use the M9 in-ear phones, which always had a really good reputation, dominating the Budget earphones cnet award for three years, among other prices. Lately, they’ve been the only earphones I carry with me, both for cell phone and MP4 music player.
An outstanding solution, specially for the ones that usually receive complaints from the quality of the cell phone mics.

MEElectronics trusted me again to do a review of their products, after the M21Ps, which you can find here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/582185/review-meelectronics-m21p-in-ear-monitors]
They are one of MEElectronics bets on the headset market, being the entry Bluetooth headset in their product range. They’re really versatile, and can be used with tablets, smartphones, computers, Macintosh products, and you can use them as simple earphones, as well. Thanks again to MEElectronics for the trust they gave me, and I really hope this review is useful for you.

The package:

I received a normal sales package, so, enclosed, I found:

  2. AF9 Headphones
  3. 2 USB charging cables
  4. 3.5mm extension cable (really useful if you plan to use them on-the-go)
  5. Carrying case
  6. 4 Pairs of Eartips (S/M/L/Dual Flange)
  7. Instruction Manual

The package is really complete, as seems to be the company’s policy. I found the 2 cables a really useful thing, because we can leave one on our work place, and the other at home, and you’ll always have one when you need. The extension cable, is not only useful, but essential. One of the flaws I found on the AF9’s is the dimension of the earphones cable. As I don’t use the headset on my chest pocket, this was quite annoying, because I always have to use the extension cable, and that adds an extra connection, and as we all know, the less connections, the better. It’s either too long or too small. Too small to reach your pocked, and too long to just attach the headset to your collar and leave it there. Each of the cables has a shirt-clip.
The carrying case is already a habit at MEElectronics, and I still find it really useful, specially with the net to keep the eartips. I found its size about ideal.

The materials:
Everything seems sturdy and ready to sustain the abuses of an everyday use. The cable, for example, seems more resistant than I was used to, at the connections, which are now protected with that kind of bending, flexible plastics you find on most jacks nowadays. Even the extra cable has them, which I think it’s an improvement MEElectronics did range-wide, and that seemed a big improvement towards the product from them I tested before. I’ve used this quite a lot, even when in a farm, picking carobs, and stuff like that, and no problems, so, I think they’re approved, sturdiness-wise.
About the looks, the earphones look really discrete and tiny, nothing that makes them stand out while you’re wearing them, which I think it’s a good thing.
The headset is good-looking, small, and only with a blue LED on it, so, it’s not something that will attract burglars or make you look like a geek. The battery holds for 5/6 hours, officially, but I would say it lasts a bit more than that, since I pass a lot of time on the phone, and I don’t recharge the Air-Fi every day.

Sound Quality:
On a headset, the thing most of us are looking for, are voice clarity, either for reception and emission through the mic. The reception is good, the earphones cope with that without any problems, and so, we can clearly hear the other person. The microphone is good, too, and really powerful when well positioned. The earphones sound really well, they’re the rewarded MEElec M9’s, and they sound really well. The only problem with them is the fit, which I explained below.

The comfort:
They’re comfortable, though, the fit isn’t perfect, or at least, I  haven’t been able to find the perfect fit. It’s like they are never completely stable. If you insert it too deep, you’ll hear next to nothing. The perfect sound seems to come when they’re almost falling, which it’s strange and annoying. The good thing is, you can use the Air-Fi with any earphones/headphones you want, so, this is easily solved!

Conclusion:
The Air-Fi’s AF9 are a really good solution on the market for Bluetooth headsets. For the price, they offer nice reception and emission of sound, a nice pair of earphones that you can use for everything and all in all, a good sollution for not having that much wires anymore, or having to carry the phone on your hand at any moment. All things considered, I recommend them.

Notes:
  • All tests were conducted in a HTC P3300 (Windows Mobile 5) and in a Vodafone Samsung 360 M1 (LiMo).
