[REVIEW] HiFiMAN HE-500 vs Sennheiser HD600

Yeah beyer better for classical.

U should listen to trance and dubstep and house to see what he-500 can do. Overall i still think he-500 better, especially off a good amp

Thanks, but I think the transition might be too abrupt. I know you're Dubstep Girl, but I'm definitely not Dubstep Boy.

This probably doesn't add much, but I remember moving from the 650 to the LCD 2 R1 and feeling it was in a different class altogether (though it still took me two weeks to wean myself off the 650's homogenous and seductive mids). However, I never liked the sound of the HE-500 and found it inferior to the DT880 Pro. I'd like to compare the HE-500 and 650, but I strongly suspect I'd prefer the 650. Jerg's mods? Well, the HE-500 sounded bad enough to me that I couldn't believe mods could rescue it, just as the Fostex T50RP sounded so bad I couldn't believe that could be rescued either. I'm happy to be proved wrong, but frankly, unless I develop a sudden and inexplicable aversion to the 880, I'm not that interested.

BTW, I'm not suggesting the HE-500 sounds anything like as bad as the T50RP. To my ears that baby is an absolute disaster unmodded.

The earpad modification I devised was specifically targeting issues with HE500's sound, mainly the midrange ringing and the poor mids->treble transition which, believe me, bugged me a lot. It's not some holistic crap branded as mods hoping to do something to a headphone's sound, and hoping it's more positive than negative.

Yes, I realize you put a lot of work into that mod and the results were much lauded--no doubt justifiably. As I say, always happy to be proved wrong. And of course the HE-500 has only relatively minor problems compared to the Fostex, which to my ears is all over the place. HE-500 even unmodded is clearly a quality product.

Anyone find the K712's and HE-500's to share a similar trait on some tracks and video?  Cavernous is the word most often used around here; I don't remember if that was why I sold the HE-6 also.

What about HD600/650?

IMHO i don't even think the HD600 or 650's is even in the HE-500's league. When properly amped + perfect souce synergy HE-500 + Li Figaro 339 sounds just beautiful. Even my IBasso DX100 drives the HE-500's to my liking. Even the HE-400 can put the 650's to the real test.

The He-500 do sound awesome for Dubstep and trance, but i kinda like the HE-400's more for that. I like the dark signature the HE-400 gives out. For Vocals and Jazz, I just love hearing those sweet mids of the HE-500's...

Do you own all of those headphones right now and do you think the  HE-400 is in the same league as the HE-500, but with a different presentation?

Are you saying you like the HE-400 more than a properly amped HE-500 for electronic music? What about for rap/hip-hop?

I still own a pair of HD650's but i no longer own a pair of HD600. I Pretty much got rid of them as soon as i recieved my HE-400. For Rap/hip hop i think that's more of an HE-400 park. But stil the HE500 are overall better performer. You wont be disappointed with either headphone actually :) if u listen to those genres.

I love how I present a detailed 2,000 word review, with pros and cons of each, then people reply with "Nah, the HE-500 is just better." "Nah, the HE-500 is in another league."

You guys crack me up.

Most people i've known has never been disappointed with the HE-500, and i am shocked that you found the HD-600 to be better than 500's D: That's kinda how i felt when i first recieved the HE-500's. I Felt the HE-400 was a much better headphone until the 500's just started growing on me. It's weird lol,

Then tell me what exactly you find better about it vs the HD600. If you're going to refute my argument, I at least expect you to fully back it up. That's the way disagreements work.
