Replacing KSC-50's annoying vinyl cord

Since I use these phones primarily with my MDP with remote, I shortened the cord by bundling it up and twist-tying them...

Now, the internal wires are sticking out from some of the places where the outer layer was worn/creased by the bundling process.

I don't see why Koss decided to use a vinyl cord as opposed to a regular rubber one... They seem to tangle far easier than rubber ones too.

I'm thinking of replacing the cord with a rubber one, from an old broken stock headphone.
Now, is there any easy way to get to the wiring inside the earpieces?
