While adding some new equipment to my audio rack I broke my beloved Sony CD3000. Bent and crunched the headband and snapped off one of the earcups. These were my only closed headphones and required for late night listening when the family is trying to sleep. I'm thinking of replacing them with a Audio Technica W5000. Any thoughts?

If anyone wants to buy a broken CD3000 let me know.

No!!! Don't get rid of your CD3000.

They are awesome!
Go to audiocubes.com and see if they have a replacement headband.
I know they have replacement pads and drivers, so I'm sure you can
get a headband.

Wow, I never knew about partstore before. Great resource! Looks like I could build myself an R10 if I were sufficiently determined.

Dude, you could get a CD3000 woodied, and then just go for R10 drivers. It'd be pretty darn close I'd wager.

I don't know if the R-10 drivers are longer avaialble, but it is true that the CD3K could be fixed easily getting a new headband from Audiocubes, and indeed it is the fastest way. unless sone have them in stock, but keep in mind that Sony do not have in stock a lot of parts that they avertise, and partstore and the rest of the people that sell parts get the parts from them, unless Audicubes that get them in Japan, from them as well. The last pads that I got were from them, not cheap but still worth...

Do the drivers really fit? Then why are the driver housings so much freaking larger? If this could be done, however, I'd be extremely interested.

The MDR-CD3000 has quite large drivers to begin with; having held the MDR-R10s, I doubt the drivers are a different size, especially given the very similar headband and such. I think the enclosure is just deeper to give it a more open sound.

Both are 50mm, but the shape could be a little different, even while Sony uses regularly same shapes on their drivers, I doubt that too many people here will be willing to open his R-10 and compare them with an CD3K, but you may ask...

I hope people aren't seriously recommending sacrificing a perfectly good CD3000 in order to make a not-an-R10, here in the "how do I save my beloved CD3000" thread.

Sorry for my side remark that seems to have turned into a threadjack.

Is this really possible? I'd be willing to front the $950 if my Headphile CD3000s could come to be around 90-95% of the R10. Maybe Larry (The CD3k Master) could chime in here?

Thanks to all for the advice. A woodied R10 creation out of my broken CD3000 is a interesting option but I don't think so. I still might sell them if the current offers hold up.

Anyway is the AT W5000 a worthy successor? I'll be listening primarily through a 300B tubed Cary 3000SEI in my dynamic rig. I really liked the CD3000 sound so I'm looking for that or better.
