I just got my ATH-AD2000's today and, like most people, I find them rather uncomfortable. As all of the Audio Technicas have the same circular shape, would it be possible to use replacement pads for the W1000 or A900 on the AD2000's?

Before you replace them I suggest trying the phatpad mod. For the brief time I had them - even though I did not find them uncomfortable by any means - the phatpad version did feel "more" comfortable than regular. I have a narrow dome though so there wasn't too much pressure on the head - I believe that it may be worse / more uncomfortable if the grip is too tight.

Right, I've seen that, but it doesn't seem like that great of an idea. I bought some Garfield Softies from B&H. Hopefully they'll fit. They seem like a good idea and they're only $20 shipped.

Give the pads time to break in and they get quite comfy. Also bend the headband outward to loosen the gripping force.

Well, the issue is my ears resting against the driver housing. I doubt the pads breaking-in would be of much help. The pads are quite nice, but they're just not thick enough to stop my ears from resting against the hard driver housing.

Pads have a significant affect on the sound IMO so I would not try make too drastic a change. At most, try one of the other AT pads e.g. W5000. The phatpad mod moves the driver farther from the ear, improves comfort, and maintains the sonic signature. You can even do both - leather pads with extra phatpad cushioning (be it a tube, foam etc)

Bluetin has them too. Don't think it is on their new Japan online store but they should have them available. Perhaps just send an email enquiring about availability and price.

Can anyone tell me how to take off the AD2000 ear pads. I just got a pair used and I'd like to clean them and I don't want to break them by taking them off the wrong way. Also, has anyone found a place to get replacement pads and if so for how much?

I've replaced my L3000 pads before and I can tell you that AT-pads can take quite a beating/tearing and not fall apart. Try starting to pull them off at the top, the seam is shorter and easier get off there. Once you get them off in one spot, the rest will come off easily.

The bigger problem is to put the new pads back on - if you don't know the trick. The trick is to put your fingers underneath the cushion, which means in between the cushion and the foam. Then put the pleather seam back into the small slit that held the pads before (say, you'd use the right hand for this). Then use the other hand (left) to hold the reattached part of the seam in place and gently slide downwards with the right hand and repeat the process. Hold the part you attached in the last step with one or two fingers but use the next one or two fingers of the left hand to hold the newly reattached part in place. Then continue to do this all the way round. It's a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's not that hard after all. I think it's harder to explain this in words than it is in reality

Oh and brand new pads may take quite a bit of stretching to get on first. I thought they didn't fit, but the stretching is normal, so don't worry.

You can get the pads "HP-AD2000" at bluetin.com:

Thanks for the info guys. What confused me is on all my other headphones the ear pad is connected to a plastic support piece and that's what detaches from the rest of the heaphone. On these is seems just the fabric comes off and then you have to re-drap it to put it back on. I got them off and am cleaning them now, hopefully I can get them back on.

That's right. Just read my last posting, it should give you all the advice you need to get them back on.
