Hi o/

I own a nice pair of sennheiser's CX 95 and everything was ok (in fact, better than just 'ok': managed to get mine for £39 and you all know how fine they sound, as I could read on the reviews) til my puppy chew the cable up. All I could find was a tiny tiny cut on the cable near the Y-joint, but now the right driver isn't functioning well. It's mute but, depending on the position, it sounds perfectly fine again

I was advised to switch the cable but I'm not sure if it could be done properly - the earphones don't appear to be 'hey, put your hands here! I'll be fine!'-made

So that's the primary question: should I try to switch it despite not knowing for sure how or should I get new ones?

I'm pretty much tempted by the second option but again i'm not thaaat confident about what to do. Everything pointed to the Head-Direct RE0 that for some reason is costing just $79 at head-direct.com, but I'm not sure anymore if I would be better off than I was with my sennys

And what about all this hype around the RE0? Is it really that good? Better than the sennys? It does look cheap and fragile to me - and the sloppy package doesn't help much

Cx series and re0 have very different sound signatures and even if re0's are great, you might miss the bass response of cx95's. If you wanna upgrade while maintaining the sound signature or at least a similar one then monster turbine would be better imo.

Yes, I noticed that. I read about the RE0's different signature sound and the famous bassy character of the sennys. But it doesnt 'shut doors' form me

What about switching the cable?

And yet about the RE0, if it really belongs to a superior quality line as some claim ($170 or even more) and is been sold at just $79, wouldn't it worth the change?

I see to options here: keeping the CX 95 or upgrading them. If I stick with the second one, it doesn't necessary mean that the upgrade must be in the same direction... but it has to be an upgrade

Well, the sound of the RE0 is excellent imo, and I like it a bit more than my JVCs, but it's certainly not for everyone.

A friend of mine who owned the Yuin PK3 earbuds for awhile actually wanted to upgrade to the RE0s. He did just that, and hated it's sound for the "lack of bass". He also said that "The sound difference between the two besides the bass was minimal, if there was any". I also found out that he couldn't get a proper seal, but by that point, he had already returned it to head-direct. He just kept using his PK3s.

The build on the RE0s aren't the best. The casing itself feels solid, but the cable feels somewhat cheap. The microphonics kinda bother me on regular usage, but the included clip reduces it considerably.

Oh, and lastly, Head-Direct has a 30 day return policy, so if you don't like it, you can return it hassle free. I'd recommend you to try it out yourself, and see if you like the sound or not.

Hmm... Thanks, this was helpful

I really like the CX 95's bass, can't complain about it - maybe just a little bit too much, but never heard anything that would stand in the same feet as sennys does
But I really listen to a lot of music. Rock, Blus, folk, celtic music, some pop... That's why I can't fold my eyes and go with bassy earphones. I do like a controlled and vivid bass, but can't afford losing the bright on the other side. And it's for this reason that the RE0 sticked in my mind - the promise of a quality, a serious quality balanced sound

Hy!
I've also started a thread like this.
I was searching for an upgrade at the $100 range.
These were the suggestions:

Klipsch S4
Maximo IM-590
Meelec M9
Radiopaq Jazz
Cyclone PR1 Pro/PR2
Monster Turbine
Denon C751/C710
AT ATH CKS70
Victor-JVC FXC70
Hippo VB
Fischer Audio Eterna
Panasonic HJE600

Honestly I could not decide between these... almost got the CKS70 but still have the CX95 cos I did not have time to make a decision...
Now I'm looking at the ATH CK10, but it starts at $200

I'd really love to give a try to all these earphones... But I'm from Brazil and you don't find all the good stuff available at local market. Whatever be my decision I'll have to import it and deal with the taxes afterwards =/

The Radiopaq Jaz caught my attention too, but I couldn't find it in stock at any online store with international shipping policy

The RE0 at direct-head.com store is priced at 79+10 shipping... that's the reason I'm so desperate for good reviews or a better option

---
Edit:

What I have found so far:
  1. RE0 - $79 + 10 (shipping)
  2. Meelectronics M6 - $39 +1? shipping
  3. SoundMAGIC PL-50 - $52.50 (or 71 with Fiip E5) + free shipping
  4. Denon AH-C452k - $39.99 + some shipping
  5. Maximo iMetal iP-HS5 - 79.99 + some shipping
  6. Maximo iM590 - 59.99 + some shipping

There are some others but I don't recall right now. Basically, my roof-price at the moment would be $90. I may afford some more if it really worths the effort but ain't in my first plan

Damn peripheral economies!

It's a steal foreign electronic stuff here. I got my Sansa Clip+ 4GB at 49 dollars shipping included, that's equal to 87 reais (our currency). I found another Clip 2GB here... at 269 reais! It's 147 dollars!
Of course it's a particular case that doesnt represent the big picture, but you have just two options here: iPods at a more reasonable price or import from ebay's auctions
