Ok, so I get my new D-515 in the mail and hook it up to see what condition it's in. Headphone out-one channel keeps coming in and out, ok fixable...line out-only one channel is working, sh_t, doesn't look good. Power jack is also loose and the player keeps turning on and off. So I open her up to see what I can do and begin to mess with all of the jacks. So I adjust the contacts a bit to improve the connection and check to see if I made a difference and now the player won't read discs. It keeps showing a NO DISC message. Now I'm really worried. So I look around and DAMN, I some how tore the optical assembly cable cutting the four wires that run through this paper thin piece of plastic. So, I spend the next 4 to 5 hours trying to make some sort of bridge between the two broken ends. I manage to do a decent job but still nothing, something isn't making a connection. And then I rembemer how Duncan stated that this player had a different optical tracking than other players he had seen and how PeterR IIRC responded by stating that the D-35 had the same tracking, where the assembly starts at the center and moves out towards the right. So I go pull out my spare D-35 and begin taking her apart. Once Im in I notice that not only is this the identical optical assembly, but all of the cable configurations are identical. So I swap the two and it's a perfect fit! Take note D-515 owners, better stock up on a D-35 for spare parts! So seeing that the D-35 is pretty much out of commision, I replace the headphone out as well. I did manage to fix the line out and power jack without having to replace them with the D-35's, luckily...So it's now in perfect working condition. So, I just scoured ebay looking for another D-35 to have as backup......

BTW, the D-303 uses the exact same mechanism.

Yeah, it is pretty sad. But the way I looked at it was that the D-35 is easily replaced, there were at least 4 on ebay just this last week. Most recently, this one....

Also, they sell for a fraction of what a D-515 would cost. So between having a working D-35 or a working D-515, I opted for the D-515.

Yeah, I'd seen that one, but even at that price couldn't make up any excuse to get yet another one. But now that I think of it...protective custody?

So how's the sound of the 515?

Pappucho, that makes me feel a lot better now that I didn't even have a chance to bid on that 515--I don't have any D35's laying around! Congrats on the repair.

Waaaiitt! Don't buy that D-35 for parts just yet! Well, I waited until I could do some extended listening to be sure, but while the two parts look identical, they don't "sound" identical. Two things have happened after the exchange. One, and I am still trying to figure this one out, is that the line out has a lower audible output on the d-515/d-35 than the original d-515. Second, the brightness is gone on the headhpone out but with it some of the soundstage as well. I didn't expect this part to have such an effect on the sound seeing it looked the same but apparantly it is built differently somehow. The only visible difference I could tell between the two was a ground wire that on the D-515 connects to the housing of the optical assembly and on the D-35 connects to one of the flat wire assemblies. Other than that they look pretty much like the same assembly. I will try to post some more impressions later on as I spend more time with each.

If this helps saving some innocent D35s I'm all for it, but if we're talking about the optical assembly it's highly unlikely (to put it cautiously) that it could have the effects you describe. Either the two (two???) 515s were different from the beginning, or you messed up something else in the process...

Yeah, the changes I am experiencing is difficult to blame on the swapped optical assemblies. I don't think anything else was altered though, everything is as it should be. I have a third D-515 on the way soon and I am curious to see how that one sounds in comparison.
