renaming duplicate song titles (not filename)

I have a large collection of loss-less tracks some of which have the same name for the song title (not the file name) - does anyone know of a utility or using foobar/media monkey or other program whereby i can automatically deal with this by changing the duplicate names (perhaps by adding a number) - there is a complication that some of the song names exist several times e.g. i have 6 versions of st. louis blues which i would like to be renamed to distinguish between them.

In Foobar you can right-click the song in the playlist and select Properties from the menu. This brings up the metadata editor where you can make whatever changes you want. The fields you will see are internal descriptors and don't affect file names.
 
Another way to manage that in Foobar without a need to edit tags is to use the "Title / Track Artist" column instead of just the "Title" - it can be selected by right-clicking on the column header on the playlist. Not sure if this works for you, just indicating that such option exists.

 Thank you, however what i want is a program that automatically does this on a batch - i have plenty of programs that will do it manually e.g. dbpoweramp

Don't you want to add some information that tells you which version is which? The normal way of doing this would be to identify the album the song came from. Do your songs not have an album name?

How would any automatic tool figure out how to identify different versions and name them appropriately? IN other words, what good is it to see St. Louis Blues (1), St Louis Blues (2), etc?
