...When I joined this blasted site, I had a nice set of PX100s... 2 months later, I've bought four other pairs of cans (PortaPros, ATH-ES7s, HD595s, Amp'd Noise Cancelling) and a portable amp (RSA P-51), and I am seriously considering getting a pair of AKG K701/702s...

...But my ears have never been happier

Sounds like you need a Pico Dac or Apogee Duet to go with the Mac

I can't seem to stop either.... I keep telling myself my ears are better for it

My wife continues to think I am nuts, which is only partially true.

To add, I am very happy with my setup at this point. Don't have a desire to change anything. I have been focused on buying and listening to music.

701 is a great phone - I have no real urge to upgrade from them now.

Get a pair of vintage Lambdas and be done with the endless upgraditis / diminishing returns of the dynamic world.

Apogee Duet / Pico DAC -> Stax SRD-7 / Stax SRM-1 -> SR-Lambda (Normal/Signature/Nova signature) = High-end electrostatic sound for the price of a mid-fi dynamic setup.
If I had realized this back in 2005, I would have saved myself several hundreds of hard earned euros.
