there is so much music in the low end of the spectrum, that if your headphones aren't able to reproduce it then you're really missing out on some very important sound. bass is integral to almost all music (not just "bass-heavy" genre's). i've always concentrated on details and mid-range timbre, frankly because i wasn't aware of what i was missing in the music.

i've owned the hd650, hd600, rs-1, and many more, paired with "high-end" amplifiers which were capable of driving them, plenty of aftermarket cables, balanced, single-ended, you name it. i now believe none of them have done the lower frequencies justice.

i recently picked up a bone stock dt770/pro 80 and i can't believe how excellent this headphone is. the low frequencies are reproduced so well, and very intricately, not boomy at all. it's all this low frequency which is now being filled-in, in instruments, voices, etc which suddenly appears...which might lead people to believe there's "too much" or that it "booms".

the rest of the spectrum is also reproduced very well, not better than some of the other headphones i've owned, but very good nonetheless. there's also a good amount of soundstage and detail, something on the level of a higher-end grado...needless to say, not world-class, but definitely quite good. but the low frequencies, it's like i'm hearing all sorts of music which just wasn't being reproduced by any of my other headphones before...

which is why the DT770 is a very well regarded headphone on this site and in the general hifi community.

EDIT also why the darth beyers are based off them
